TV Advertising. a little quiz
« on: March 25, 2016, 09:19:05 pm »

In today's advertising on TV when even condoms are now advertised, what is the only commodity, other than smoking related items, that we don't and never have seen advertised on TV in this country, and what is the reason for that.

it will be obvious to all when divulged.

got it Andy.

motorcycles, but why not

Are we dumbed down so much these days that the ASA think we can't cope with such "speedy" machines. And they have never ever been advertised on TV.

Is it not more down to 'size of potential audience'?

30 seconds in the middle of Corrie costs an advertiser multi-tens of thousands. I doubt Triumph's profits* could stand that for repeated airplay, when they can target magazines for much less £s which specifically appeal to their target audience.

Andy, trying to think of a shed advert.

Nope, it's not just advertising costs, ever since the 1960's the voluble, articulate, hand wringing, noise abatement, safety conscious brigade of do-gooders has taken the narrow minded view of such things as motorcycles as the totem of folk who are anti social, anti authority and just about anti everything else. Rural motorcycle sports such as trials, scrambles and grass-track racing, which was once so popular with both participants and spectators has just about died out. Even the iconic TT races in the I.O.M. are barely mentioned by the BBC whereas they were once broadcast live ,and although MotoGP  and the Superbike series is considerably less predictable than the boring parade of F1 , it gets very little coverage.
So not just cost but bias.

Talking of TV 'adverts', anyone know what the new Channel 4 'ident' is all about'
Briefly, monkeys running around a rock bed, huge quarrying explosion, hundreds of men in white forensic all-in-ones searching back and forth for 'blue crystals,' - what is that all about?!?

We had a similar thing when I worked for the RAC before the re-brand. There was a great little advert, very similar in style to the C4 ident, and so may even be the same ad agency. Like I said, great little advert, very, very clever. But the test audience didn't know who/what the ad was for.

You dont watch BSB or motoGP then plenty of bike ads between races on Eurosport and BTsport the TT has full coverage these days on ITV4 and BTsport.  The BBC can not afford to have any sport because they are being starved of money by the gov.

According to the BBC's 2013/14 Annual Report, its total income was £5 billion (£5.066 billion),[1] which can be broken down as follows:£3.726 billion in licence fees collected from householders;£1.023 billion from the BBC's Commercial Businesses;£244.6 million from government grants, of which £238.5 million is from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for the BBC World Service

.... That's what Wiki says anyway.

Any number of bike ads on Australian TV, especially around Moto GP time, and as for sheds - there are many ads for them too, from a number of different companies.

I remember adverts for sheds, as part of TV ads for garden conservatories. The ads were for one of the big dealerships in the NW. This was on Granada TV back in the 70s and 80s.

Ear plugs, fetishwear, mousetraps?

Ones I miss are Esso Blue paraffin, Ovaltine and the TV Times - all in glorious 405-line B&W! They don't make 'em like that any more...
