Hicks "one-lunger" engine in 1:8 scale
« on: March 26, 2016, 08:00:09 pm »

Hicks made gasoline marine engines in San Francisco, engines which were popular in the small fishing boats known as "Monterey Clippers". And the construction of these Monterey boats often left the engine in a semi-exposed location... so if you model the boat, you must model the engine!

I've secured copies of original Hicks factory drawings, mostly drawn in the 1920's, and so have been able to model one of these engines in CAD... and of course, it's a short step from there to 3D printed models.

Pictures below:
Example Hicks engine at the San Francisco Maritime park;
Most of my CAD model;
Big parts of the engine are in place (it's very much a work in progress);
The flywheel, for scale.

The large parts have come off a Formlabs Form 1+ desktop SLA printer. Smaller detail parts will come from Shapeways in Frosted Detail, or Shapeways' lost-wax brass investment castings (such as all the shiny bits). And there are a number of self-machined shafts and such, along with a load of miniature brass screws.

Hi Pat,

That flywheel looks like a splendid piece of printing. It reminds me of the sprockets and idlers on an A7V tank (but without the counterweight ).

And, combining the printed brass thread with this Hicks engine thread- printed brass parts on the Hicks!

This is the rocker arm assembly, all machined and assembled, but not yet polished.

Hi Pat. Great looking job.
I am in the process of trying to build a working semi scale model in about 1/6 scale. I say 'about' as I have no real drawings to work from and there are limits to what can be made to scale and remain functional. My main problem is getting the camshaft / crank cross gears to look scale. It will be 25 bore and 32 stroke with a 60 conrod length. Compression ratio of 5:1. Base will be fabricated.
Overall sizes are 190 long 160 high 100 wide. Can you give me some idea if this works out at 1/6 scale or am I way out.

Hi, thanks, and sorry, is it a Hicks engine you are building?
Mine is "animated" but non-firing... so I can't speak to what's needed in a firing engine.

As for the gears, see more in my build thread at RC Groups: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2601629-Hicks-Engine-Project/page15
I chose not to commission a correct set of 2:1 ratio crossed helical gears... instead I am using a commercial worm set that provides 5:1- it's OK for my animation.

Ah, and for general size- see https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2601629-Hicks-Engine-Project/page6#post34067408 ... this is a later version, but but very nearly the same size.

Love  the wonderful detail in your engine. Thanks for the links.
A quick check shows I am not far out so I can use the info to adjust slightly. I should be able to get quite close with skew gears from http://hpcgears.com/pdf_c33/25.2-25.3.pdf.
I have attached a simple concept drawing so you can see it looks fairly close to the Hicks.

Almost done!
Almost everything here is 3D printed, even the shiny brass... just a few bits are machined or PE.

Magnificent Pat :-))....

Just one question, is the gear driven box a form of magneto with n house shoe magnets inside?

Thanks, and yes, but I'd say that the horseshoe magnets are on the outside, no?

You can read more about it in the main construction thread, right... about... here: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2601629-Hicks-Engine-Project/page18#post37132978

Here's the (mostly) 3D printed engine model, running on it's display stand:
