Hicks made gasoline marine engines in San Francisco, engines which were popular in the small fishing boats known as "Monterey Clippers". And the construction of these Monterey boats often left the engine in a semi-exposed location... so if you model the boat, you must model the engine!
I've secured copies of original Hicks factory drawings, mostly drawn in the 1920's, and so have been able to model one of these engines in CAD... and of course, it's a short step from there to 3D printed models.
Pictures below:
Example Hicks engine at the San Francisco Maritime park;
Most of my CAD model;
Big parts of the engine are in place (it's very much a work in progress);
The flywheel, for scale.
The large parts have come off a Formlabs Form 1+ desktop SLA printer. Smaller detail parts will come from Shapeways in Frosted Detail, or Shapeways' lost-wax brass investment castings (such as all the shiny bits). And there are a number of self-machined shafts and such, along with a load of miniature brass screws.
