How much current do you need to switch? If it's only a few amps at 12 volts then go to www.technobotsonline.com they have a selection of digital timers.

Larry
I've had a look on the Technobots site and this one, subject to the current limits, seems to do the job. It's also on offer at less than half price. http://www.technobotsonline.com/universal-start-stop-1-hour-timer-kit.html

If you need more current switching then you could always use the one Dave M refers to switch an additional high current capable relay

Hi All
Thanks for the links, Although they would all do the Job what I was originally looking for was something which would cut the power after say 5 to 10 minutes with an electronic countdown display..  However after some consideration and thought about who might be using these timers I fear I may just have to resort back to the old fashioned egg timer,.

The power it would have been cutting off would have only been 12v from a car battery..

However still investigating into this project and looking through the Technobots site..

In this day and age with timers being used for more than
checking your toast ain't burning, and all sorts of nastys
in the World around us, places like my old workhouse
scan the ether etc for dodgy dealings.
When the Cowboys in white hats check you out, they
have the technology to stay at arm's length whilst
checking you out.

Gotcher.
Mobile phones are now the trigger of choice, I understand.
Timers were passé even in James Bond's later days, but I guess that seeing the digits count back towards zero added to the tension.
I haven't got Larry down as an enemy of the state.  :-))

Aaah I see, no, no longer a threat to NS

No its to control a set of three transmitters when we do shows when we have the he pond out.

I had thought about it getting off the power to the tX and then sending an electric shock through the unit, but apparently that is against health and safety !!

How about a stopwatch followed by a clip round the earhole? No doubt that's against any number of laws.

I recall somebody doing just this for much the same purpose on Model Boats Mag forum last year.
Timing, not the 'ear'ole clip.
It could be possible to have the main timer trigger a sub-timer so as to give a few seconds of warning before switch-off, but no doubt the minder could just keep an eye on the counter anyway before deploying the cattle prod.

Well I ordered 3 of the units Inertia suggested as the cost was pretty cheap. They were delivered from the UK and only took 3 days .

The aim of this Little project as I think has been mentioned before is.

At show we attend we have the Have a go boats to try to interest  the public, and hopefully the young to take up the hobby, if not know , then later. We find that this is very popular . Another of our group has built a stand to take 3 transmitters so that they are not being swung around every where , these will be powered by 1 12v Car Battery. A standard egg timer was going to be used, however I stupidly suggested that we could come up with something more technological and after a set amount of time would turn off the power so that they all get a chance to play as we do find some public do hog them, I was given the task to sort it..

The instructions...there were none provided, and the wiring diagram did not really explain it to me, so I went on youtube and found a similar device and was able to back engineer it.

Here is a video of it working

This was on the supplier's website - for the benefit of anyone else who might buy one. Looks like a useful little piece of kit.
