Don't know about Widows 10, but my version of Windows 10 still has the Windows Media Player that plays DVDs. Maybe this was because it was an upgrade from Windows 8.1 not a new machine.

VLC via a reputable site such as majorgeeks.
Any freeware might carry bundleware which is "extras" that clutter your machine if you use the "express" install.  NEVER use express, it is not recommended for your benefit but for the benefit of the people behind the extras.  You might get a bunch of "improvements" offered - decline them all.
For use as a jukebox I now use Winamp.  It takes a bit of head scratching first time but works well afterwards.
I've just updated my final PC - one that was got cheap as a refurb running Vista to use as a music box.  I used a legal download site to get the W7 files and a CoA, cost just under £20 (turned out to be a branch of Amazon).  A couple of hours later, I had a working W7 machine.  Just needed the updates and, because it hadn't grabbed the wireless adaptor drivers, a cable link to the router.  To days later, after it had done the updates (213 of them), it offered the W10 update.  Another couple of hours, a W10 machine that just needed my chosen programs installing.  There is the usual freeware option section - NEVER USE EXPRESS, ALWAYS LOOK AT THE OPTIONS.  It does work better now.  It boots faster, closes faster and, among other things, its wireless connector allows it to be used for listening to on line radio which was a bit iffy before.
To get rid of MS's bundled malware, I found a helpful site at - http://www.howtogeek.com/225973/how-to-disable-onedrive-and-remove-it-from-file-explorer-on-windows-10/ - which has useful copy and paste directions for getting rid of most of the unwanted clutter.

It will do, you upgraded, not a clean install so should work.

VLC has its own website:

VLC is short for "Video Lan Client"...

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

I will always download a product from its "home" website before i would ever use an "aggregator" like cnet or filehippo or softonic... who love to add a ton of crapware to their installers.

Took less than 3 minutes from start to finish to install, first glance , looks good.
