How it used to be done.....

A lovely short piece of Pathe movie tape on how models were built in 1956

Just needed Mr Chumley-Warner to drop in.

Not seen a spoke-shave being used for a long time, and not one power tool to be seen!

Nice find Brian

Bread and butter hull construction :-)) I would love to see the whole film, I reckon it would be really inspirational.

Two superb models there, I recall seeing the original ships at Southampton.

But bread and butter construction would be anathema today, all that lovely yellow pine and you end up throwing 90% of it away!

Give the shavings to a relative with rabbits or Gerbils as bedding (Unless the resin content is too much) Oops, sticky rodents :((

Would they be STATICS or MOTORIZED ?
You wouldn't get away with those tool types today , the powers that be would want an 'exclusion' zone  around the working area / heavy industrial gloves & dust extraction equipment . . . .  %%   :police:

Erm. I used a spoke shave today, and I'm not as old as the film. A very useful tool.

Thanks for pointing this one out Brian - I'll pass the link onto Brian_C - he built a model of the Caronia when it was the Vista Fjord.

I've no doubt he'll be thrilled to see this bit of footage. :-))

Regards,

Ray.

Not the same ship Ray. You are looking at the Caronia built for Cunard just after the war.

DOH ! :embarrassed: :-)

You're quite correct Colin - Vistafjord wasn't even around at that time.
Thank you for putting me right though ... :-)

Regards,

Ray.
