Transmitters
« on: April 07, 2016, 09:45:42 am »

I am looking to buy a Transmitter / receiver, and after a lot of looking notice that Amazon have several "Fly Sky" brand models. Does anybody have any experience of these. If not please recommend a brand and supplier with a cost of up to £70.

A lot of people have them, and love them, whereas another lot of people wouldn't touch them with a bargepole......read "wouldn't trust anything cheap chinese"

I am firmly in the former group.
I have a FlySky FS-i6, and have never found any problem with it.
I have used it for boat, car, Heli and quadcopter.
I also like the fact that receivers are not too expensive, it has telemetry facility (ideal to monitor the voltage of onboard battery), the footprint of the Tx is small, therefore easier to handle, and full 1.5km range (wow)....whats not to like?

I just saw a Turnigy I10 and thought it is fantastic, 10 channels large touch screen and live telemetry on a 2.4ghz system, I don't need a new radio but am considering getting one because it looks such a good radio at a fantastic price....... Look at this

I had a Spektrum 5 channel, it started being untrustworthy after 14 months, so bought a FlySky 6 channel with a reciever for less than I paid for the Spektrum handset alone.

The FlySky has been perfect so far, ok, it needs 8 batt's in the h/set instead of 4 for the Spektrum, but with nimhs, who cares.  :-)

Only thing about the FlySky is, the warning beeps if you don't move a stick for 2 minutes, you can't fall asleep with a FlySky.  :-))

I bought a FlySky FS-GT2E with receiver to use with my airboat about nine months ago, it cost the princely sum of £16 no problems at all, no glitches, no servo judder, works just as it should,  I found the wheel TX so intuitive and liked it so much I just bought a FS-GT3B 10 model memory and for me just the right amount of functions for £25 I really don't care where they are made. I have a Spektrum DX5e which is going on for 10 years old. It started failing to bind with its receivers and I was going to switch to Flysky/Turnigy until Craggie posted that there was fix - fit a new on/off switch, which I did and that fixed it. BUT I also bought a Turnigy TG-i6.

I certainly appreciate the model memories, maybe the telemetry could be useful, and I do like the compact size and it feels a solid Tx. However, I have had some problems - like the Spektrum it suddenly wouldn't connect to already bound receivers, or bind new ones. After doing two factory resets, its working again, but I am now not sure I can rely on it.

I will keep the Spektrum because I like building small models and you can buy very small DSM2 receivers - the i6 receivers are bigger.

I have done some more research, and read your replies ,which I thank you for you input. The thing I notice is all of the articles I have read about the various models of Transmitter state "Model Type" Glider, Helicopter, Aeroplane, Car. The question is are they suitable for boats as well, or do I need a totally different type of Transmitter.

You can use a plane transmitter for boats ..... No difference

That said, if you use a transmitter that is not a 2.4g you would have to check the crystals. For example aircraft use one frequency boats another and land vehicles another. But as you are buying a new transmitter I suggest going down the safer and more modern 2.4g route. It's suitable for all.

There are very few marine orientated radio sets!
"Glider, Helicopter, Aeroplane, Car" refers to what 'job'  the radio was specialised to do, i.e. split ailerons, flaps, crow mixing, vee tail, collective pitch, throttle hold, etc, etc.
Some of those "mixes" can be very useful in boats if you need them. e.g. twin engine mixing.
