Restoring my Northwind 36 racing yacht
« on: July 17, 2012, 01:20:52 pm »

About 9 years ago I built my very first r/c boat, a semi-scale Northwind 36 yacht. It was a fairly simple build, nothing like the boats I've been building recently, but I faced many new challenges and finally came out with a half-decent sailing boat. To cut a long story short, she hasn't sailed for many years and is badly in need of renovation. I'm afraid that the only picture I have of her  in her heyday is this one (not very good).

So here's the story...

Well. I started on the yacht. Bought two new servos, as I had plundered the old ones, replaced and refitted the r/c and steering gear, sailing gear etc and tested it - worked first time.

I took it out into the garden today to clean it off, wetted it down and proceeded to use a fairly soft brush to clear away the accumulated dust, dirt and gunk that has taken several years to establish itself and...

...I SNAPPED THE JIB BOOM!  <:( <:( <:(

I'm pretty sure there were spare booms with the kit and I'm pretty sure I saved them but - do you think I can find them?

Our study/den/dumping ground is crammed with boxes, papers, leads, electrical things, musical instruments and their assorted gadgetry, amplifiers, computers, books, assorted nick-nacks, you name it and it's probably in there, so it's going to be an uphill struggle on this one. The spares may even be in the attic, which is even worse than the study!

A couple of better pictures of what she used to look like. I knew I had some somewhere - mis-filed in the wrong folder D'OH!

WOOHOO! We're back in business. Many thanks to triumphjon for supplying the replacement boom!  :-)) :-)) :-))

Next job is to fit brass stanchions and rails, then sort out the sag in the mainsail.

Then a test drive, methinks.  O0

Looks like we're good to go. New jib boom, rails (brass this time) bow rail and anchor and flags. I added extra sail stiffeners as the sail was deifintiely a bit saggy.

Some pictures of the internals for Triumphjon.

The lid of the r/c compartment is just held on with waterproof tape - not pretty but it does the job. You could open up some holes and put some screws into the servo cover, but the tape does help to waterproof the r/c/ box.

The two servos are standard ones, as recommended by the kit manufacturers, but I feel that the sail servo is very underpowered and not up to the job if there is much of a wind blowing.

The 'guts' hanging out in the third picture are simply shoved in the r/c compartment on top of the battery pack.
