HMS Cossack Colours
« on: April 12, 2016, 03:54:51 pm »

I'm looking for some help on the right colours for Cossack, pre war, as per the below picture. Using Tamiya colours; I'm thinking hull sides and superstructure Sky Grey XF19, Fore & Aft decks Flat Earth XF52, Main Deck Buff XF57 and side decks Light Grey XF66, thoughts? Has anyone got a proper colour reference for pre war Tribals?

BTW, the Deans Marine kit is somewhat contradictory and has been a bit of a nightmare......

Thanks, Ian

It depends where Cossack served.

If it was the Home Fleet then the colour will be 507a.

If it was the Med Fleet then 507c.

507c is much lighter than 507a.

Not sure regarding that illustration as it says 1941 and yet appears to have Spanish Civil War identification bands on B turret, which would indicate 1938.

Try asking here:-

Since Cossack served right through the war you have quite a choice of colour schemes. The Wikipedia entry shows her in a multi-coloured Home Fleet standard destroyer scheme in 1944. Earlier she wore a simpler Western Approaches scheme of white and light blue. Later, when she served in the Far East she most probably wore an Admiralty standard scheme of light grey overall with a blue hull panel.

Well worth researching; there are too many plain grey model warships.

Hi,

I just read the thread I posted in my post above and it says HMS Cossack was overall 507b during the 2nd Battle of Narvik right up until the Bismarck chase and pendant F03. The pendant became G03 from late spring/early summer 1940.

When sunk she was 507a hull and 507c upperworks.

Home Fleet Grey from WW1 until Jan 1939 was 507B. 507A was reintroduced as a colour in Jan 1939 with the same colour formula as 507B less the addition of enamel which made it high gloss.

507A, 507B and G10 are all the same colour. The only difference in them was the gloss level.

Mea culpa, looked up Eskimo rather than Cossack. Don't ask why...

Paint now on, I tried to get as close as I could to the scheme I think she would have had in 1938 ish on the Mediterranean Spanish Civil War patrol. All that's left is stanchions to fit, yards and new battery (on order).
