Diva scratch build
« on: April 18, 2016, 03:29:56 pm »

Hi all, Hope you all don't mind me posting another build log, I do like to look back on my builds and posting them on Mayhem is a good way to keep me focused on keeping a log up to date.

So this log is going to be my version of a semi scale 1960's Diva, she's 580mm long and 180mm beam, powered by a brushed 400 motor, mainly because I had a spare etronix probe brushed ESC, plus I'm only looking for scale speed, and I'll see how she performs with a two bladed prop to start with.
I've spent the last two days drawing up the plans, as I said in another thread it's been over 40 years since I scratch built a hard chine hull so I'm really drawing on the old memory here, I'm planning on making the whole cabin/wheelhouse/cockpit removable as one unit giving full access to the running gear etc. the finish will be white hull with blue boot topping/ blue cabin/wheelhouse with white roofs instead of the more traditional varnished mahogany.
I was off to the local model shop tomorrow to get all the ply/strip wood for it but just thought I would do a price comparison between the local shop/ slec,uk and CMB for the list I had the local shop was £27.49 for the same list Slec uk was £12.29 with CMB somewhere in the middle, even with the postage Slec uk  was £9 cheaper,  Ok model shops have overheads but presumably Slec must also have overheads just like model shops they have to keep their stock somewhere, so sorry it's a no brainer for me and I don't have to get the car out and find somewhere to park.

I shall be keeping up with this one as well.
I have some plans somewhere for a very similar hull, and will look upon a build with great interest ... if I may.

I saw the title (I didn't notice the mistake until you mentioned it) my brain ignored my eyes and just put it right inside my head....... Which is probably what happens when I look at my finished boats and no one has the heart to tell me {-)

I was surprised when I saw it was you Joe, but in a good way. I'm pulling up my chair next to the others and reaching for a piece of Ballasts cake and waiting for a brew from Starspider ........ anybody want a biscuit ?...... U2

while waiting for the wood to arrive I've been pottering about fine tuning the drawings, tracing the frames, cut out the keel and marked out a building board, To my surprise the wood came ten minute's ago, excellent service from Slec, considering it was only ordered Monday 4 o clock and was delivered well packed at 9.30 today (Wednesday) cheap and good quality, Slec for me from now on.

so now to get all the frames marked and cut out, I won't bore you all with this in detail I'll post again when I get to the hull assembly stage, otherwise Starspider's tea will get cold

Did you fine tune your drawings to suit the way you are building Diva, or were they a bit wonky?

Hi Ian,   by fine tuning I meant going over them and double checking for mistakes that could effect how everything lines up when assembled, checking the notches in the frames are the correct size etc. The tracings are now all transferred to the ply using graphite paper, so now to cut them all out.  :-))

got all the frames cut out and started the assembly, so far so good attention to detail like making sure all the notches were the right size etc seems to be paying off and she's going together quite well,  when I ordered the timber for this project I got 1.5mm ply for the deck and cabin but like a numpty I forgot to get the hull ply, I attempted to bend the 1.5mm round the bow section but felt it had too much tension on it so now I ordered some  .8 birch for sheathing the hull.

Thanks Simon, I haven't built a hull in over forty years, so far this one is better I guess I must have learnt something over the years. %%

Don't forget your Springer from 2015 O0

Are the frames just glued to the build board, or is just resting there?

Ian, I don't really count the Springer as a hull build more like a box build  %%  {-)
The frames are tacked to the building board with a spot of Cyanoacrylate under the lofting lugs, once the keel and stringers are glued in and most of the sanding is done the assembly will be released by tapping each lug with a small chisel.

Forgetting the ply for the hull turned out quite an advantage fitting the motor was so much easier with the hull open, as I had a spare brushless motor I decided to fit that instead of the 400 brushed motor, so the motor and shaft are now fitted and removed till I clad the hull and coat the inside with sealer, next I make up the rudder to my usual laminated pattern.

Hi there

Looking good  :-))

Is the shaft tube in plastic ? if yes please be very careful when plating the hull as even minor tensions can have an negative influence on the tube and it may jam the shaft , been there with my first try on GG's Miami had to scrap the hull  >>:-(
