Thankyou for a great day at Wicksteed folks! It was lovely to meet some of my fellow Mayhemists again and see some astounding models and learn a few more useful ideas for building and finishing.

While mainly a warship fan, I did like the other models, and was impresed with the lakeworthiness of that minute yacht that plied the chop yesterday afternoon amongst the giant life boats!
After this morning's noise at the motel I am tempted to try camping next year (Or take ear defenders  <*<   )

How many boats were there on Saturday?  From the pictures it looks like loads got on the water.  We drove up from Canterbury and arrived mid afternoon to find one boat sailing and a very small number on display.  We walked round the pond, had a second look at the displays and went home very disappointed less than fifteen minutes after we arrived.  I've seen way better displays at Herne Bay eight miles away.  I won't be going "up north" again soon.

Croakle,
Sounds like you are omitting a small fact.....
The wind was kicking up such as swell it was swamping models
Also it was so windy the sailing boats couldn't sail!!!!

You left inside 15minutes...... so you missed the whole point of the weekend
To meet and interact with like minded people have a bit of a natter and banter

Myself and 3 others travel from scotland and we WILL be back  :-))

The weather had turned pretty nasty and had curtailed most activity by 2 ish. The morning saw a good selection of boats sailing with repeat performances.

I thought I might get around to talk to everyone this weekend, but missed a good few people today.

Did you have a conversation with anyone yesterday Croakle? I ask because the time would have flown especially with so many great models to find out about. I drove up from Sussex (but usually drive up from Somerset) and believe me, if I did not think it worth going I would not drive that far! If I did not have to leave thismorning, I would have been there until the traffic had died down thisevening.

Arrive at any show mid afternoon you would have missed a lot by the time of your arrival . Since Mayhem is an out door show it is at the mercy of the weather . In the morning the wind speed was low . by lunch it was getting up and by afternoon it was getting to windy for models to sail safely. Did you Ron Dean had 3 models broken by the wind . I stopped sailing at about 2 ish due to the wind .
The fact is you turned up late towards the end of the day  expect an informal show to be at its peak . Try arriving early .

It was a shame that Ron lost so many models, and a few display items as well due to unpredictable gusts. Several of us did our best to keep things steady while Ron and Klunk ferried stuff to the van.

What was the weather like today?

Today the weather was hot.........and virtually no wind.
Again a brilliant weekend, spoilt by the high wind. ...but  not too much!
2 early nights by the campers.....both well before midnight. Saturday night was particularly cold dropping to 5 degrees.
He's there was Sloe gin, as well as calvados and pastiche. ...and parsnip wine amongst other normal drinks.
Friday was fish and chips night and a few brave souls had battered deep fried haggis!
Saturday was the normal BBQ evening....but we started early. Normal fayre of burgers sausages kebabs, chops etc as well as plain chicken and a peri peri and rum chicken cooked by the Luton chef and the Scottish chef. Thanks all those that ate it!!
Sunday started brilliantly. Very warm and it just got warmer. Lots of sailing and many Conversation's!
Ballastanksian......I must have talked to you but I still,  after all these years cannot put a face to your name!

Thanks to all those that had books of me and donated to the RNLI.
Thanks to all the Wicksteed crew for, as ever hosting the event. To Martin and Mrs Mayhem and Little Miss for tirelessly making tea and taking pics.
Little Miss, if the zip wire is open next year I will pay for you to climb the wall and go on it.
To the Scottish contingent.....gain a big thanks for keeping everything fun, especially to Dave.....trousers and trainers.
To all those that camped........it's always fun....especially when Jaydee made Nick move his tent as it was in his parking spot!
To Bobk ....... more than a few things learnt  from you this weekend.
To all. ....and this is unbelievable. ....no sinkings  that we are aware of!  Even with all the high winds. I went in the lake twice to help build a dock and dismantle it.

Apart from Ron''s models, only 1 gazebo at the campsite was damaged beyond repair. ...but one of the Scottish contingent used the fabric Saturday night to keep warm. One other slightly damaged.

Overall a great weekend. If you are going to attend in future check the weather an turn up early! You might see some boats in the water!

Wow !!  A super two and a half days, seeing as I had previously only gone for day visits.
First time I have been in a tent for nearly forty years.  Thanks to Klunk and the camp site team for helping put my mini tent up and being so friendly and welcoming.  Nice fish & chips dinner Friday, very fun BBQ Sunday.  Two nice cooked breakfasts helped to warm the heart after chilly nights.
The Bacon butties and hot cuppa's at the Mayhem family table are always special.

Friday and Saturday were a (bit) windy but I still sailed my ultra low freeboard Polyphemus and Royal Marine. The projected storm passed by with only a few little damp things for a short while.  Quite a few boats were still being run until late on Saturday.

Sunday was awesome weather. very low wind and plenty of sun.  Always nice to chat with so many Mayhem colleagues.  Ballastanksian:  Nice to finally put a face to your Sign-in.  I was totally surprised by Ron Dean slipping up on me with a brand new Agincourt hull.    (See Agincourt thread for photo)

A complete battle squadron in line astern was a sight that blew the mind.  HMS Iron Duke with guns firing, HMS Dreadnaught, HMS Superb, and HMS Rodney, escorted by HMS Suffolk.  All mega big ships.
Nick & Steve's Admiralty Train Ferry seems to look better each time I see it, and the sub X1 cuts a fine figure on the water.  Lots of very early TBD's in various guises, plus some unusual Japanese warships.

I must apologise to Ron K for spending much of the day drooling over his awesomely detailed HMS Agincourt.

Unfortunately it seems that some still don't understand the Mayhem Weekend.
It isn't your usual model boat show.
It is a way for internet Forum members to meet, chat, interact and get to know each other.
That is it.
Oh yes and have some fun sailing model boats.
I have made some good friends here over the years and even got to see young Colin from Glasgow Richmond after a gap of about 20 yrs and about 2'6 in height.

Evening All  :-)) :-)) :-))

Wicky Weekend!!! What can we say?

Thanks to all who make this great event what it is - it is truly one of a kind.  Where else can you see Ron Dean shrug off the fact that a number of his wonderful models got trashed by the gusts of wind that blew them and their display cases to kingdom come.  Most modellers would have been fuming and gnashing but not Ron - it was more a case of 'another cuppa then and where's me chocolate buiscuit?'  That is the spirit of Wicky!!!!!
Flo and I had a cracking time on Saturday in spite of the wind.  We sailed both the Norland and the Pride of Hythe and neither sank or turned turtle.......they both had a hell of a list at times mind!!!!!  So sorry and disappointed that we couldn't stay for today as well but I needed to be in West Wales delivering some kits.  It was great to meet up with friends again and chew the fat although I was sorry not to meet up with Ballastanksian.........at least, I am sure we didn't speak unless you tell me otherwise  :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed: .
Next year - the whole weekend from Friday to Sunday  O0 O0 O0
Carl (and Flo, of course!)

Mr and Mrs Zippy thoroughly enjoyed another great show blessed with glorious weather and calm waters on Sunday,
allowing Wallace and Gromit's steam paddler to make her 'Grandest Day Out' to date -
chugging half way around the circumference of the lake until the Meths ran out !

Nice to see friends old and new in action enjoying their hobby having FUN on the water -
stark contrast to the formal atmosphere indoors in the cold at Warwick in November where many will meet again.

Big thanks to all involved in this special unique event.

regards Paul
