Dynamic Positioning solution
« on: May 12, 2016, 03:54:49 pm »

Brian/Andy,

Started a new thread for this subject - if you have landed here the history to this topics can be found here http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,53368.msg563861.html#msg563861

My thoughts on development of a solution are based around small computer fans attached to servos (fixed to some sort of vessel) to get the correction aspects/logic worked out.

Can you explain the servo/fan correlation?

I'm thinking you are going to use the fans as pseudo ship props just to give an idea and servo's to move them as if they were azimuth props. This is obviously an easier concept on a desktop than using a ship, or am I on completely the wrong track here?

Brian 100% correct.

My logic was to get a small hull that could be propelled by small fans sitting on servos so the fans can be rotated. It will be very much chewing gum and elastic bands in construction and may well be useless in a decent breeze but much quicker to achieve for a development device.  I have just bought 12x40mm 12v fans on ebay for £22. They may be useless and I may have to upgrade my method of propulsion but got to start somewhere. I will create some simple ESC's to control the fan speed.

In that case Jonathon, what about using a plastic box? I'm  thinking a large tupperware type thing for about a fiver in Tesco, or even a shoebox, free of charge from local shoe shop. If its for development it doesn't have to look good, just be a workhorse.

^ if you go that route, you will lose your sanity.

Don't ask me how I know this.  %%

Luckily, much of the truly horrendous maths is done in-chip.
