The Millenium Wing.
« on: May 19, 2016, 05:19:28 pm »

I share this with you here as I was not sure whether to post it in the 'Humour' section. Much as it sounds like a joke, it certainly is genuine as it was sent to to assist me!
Nemo has an appointment tomorrow at the Millenium Wing at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.
I have never been there before, and viewing these instructions, I may never return!
I am glad I am reasonably fit as I cannot imagine how I would get there if I was not!

Millennium wing.
From main Barry Building reception
◾Go past the reception desk on your right and walk up the short sloping corridor
◾Take either lift up to the 2nd floor. There are stairs if you prefer
◾Exit the lift and turn left
◾Walk past the top of the stairs and lift (only if you used left hand lift from the ground floor!)
◾Follow the corridor around to the left and walk to the top of the long sloping corridor
◾Exit through the double doors and go over the road crossing
◾Walk through the covered walkway straight ahead
◾When you get to the bottom of the steps turn left in to the lift foyer
◾Take the lift down to level 3
◾Follow the long, winding corridor all the way down, passing lots of artwork on the walls
◾When you get near to the end there will be some double doors to exit outside on your right. Turn left inside the building through the double doors into the lift foyer. There are stairs if you prefer
◾Take either lift up to level 6
◾Exit the lift foyer and turn left following the signs to the Millennium wing
◾Exit the building through the double doors and you will pass a courtyard on your right
◾Cross over the road and enter the Millennium wing

Easy, isn't it! %)

Sounds like "Pill Hill", OHSU campus in the West hills.
If you arrive on anything but the 8th floor, you are not on the mainlevel.
If you make your way from any of the buildings to the 8th floor, you will then,
most likely find that the section you are looking for has moved to the new campus down
at the water front. You will then have to drive down the hill or take the sky tram to your appointment.

This is very much like the hospital I worked at.

From the pharmacy turn left down the corridor, at 100metres turn right at the cross passage. In another 100 metres go up the staircase one level. Follow the corridor and turn right at general intensive care 1 then follow the corridor. At surgical intensive care 2 turn left and follow the corridor, when you reach the quadrangle, exit via the door, cross the quadrangle. If the door at the other side is locked and you do not have a magnetic swipe card, return to reception for a diversionary route! If the door is open enter the seating area and ahead is a staircase, go up two levels along the corridor and wards, 26, 27, 28 are laid out in a T formation. Go up another level for coronary unit intensive care, go up a further level for coronary and chest surgery theatres.

These were directions to the coronary care and chest surgery unit! %% No kidding even for staff members it was a nightmare to get about. Patients were either escorted by porters or delivered direct to the door by ambulance via the outside diversionary route :} Suffice to say the hospital itself covered almost a 100 acres - everything was on the ground floor, how you ask with all the stairs? Well it started life in a valley and gradually spread up a hillside, so even though you were going upwards via stairs, every ward and department was labelled as on the ground floor  :}

I would have said it should have been in the Humour section if I had not just come from our local hospital where you enter at ground level on the second floor (No we use to British system of floor numbers not American) and come out on the first floor at ground level %%    Just as well I had to go to the third floor for treatment.   The ground floor is not accessible to patients, which is probably a good thing.

Liverpool has three hospitals at the Broadgreen site.
Liverpool Royal
Broadgreen University Hospital
Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

Just as easy to navigate, on a hill, lots of stairs and a lot of it one floor.

Here is a kicker. If you were a patient and wandered down to the shop at the Royal, from one of the other two hospitals, and collapsed, got knocked over, etc. They would send an ambulance, from the Royal, you would be admitted to the Royal. You would then be stuck there until a consultant decided to refer you to your original hospital.

Must be getting on a bit but things used to seem so simple - However be very cautious if you have to visit the Cambridgeshire NHS. I set off, doing somebody a favour, and found a whole Hospital had moved to this giant site. And the car park I was aiming for is now at the other end of the site and multi story instead of ground level. Can't be much longer and it will be bigger than Cambridge City

Seeing the main title reminded me of Millenium Falcon, and then I realised that when they built the new hospital wing in Carmarthen, there was a long curved upward sloping corridor on the outside of the building that never seemed to end. We jokingly called the new wing 'The Death Star'.

Well guys, I made it this morning and got there half an hour early to allow for 'misunderstandings' as you might call wrong turnings etc. When leaving the clinic I got to the lift and asked the porter waiting for it, if it led down to the ground floor. Yes, he said, but you have to press button for 'Level 6' !!!  %%  %%
I have a repeat visit in 6 months - just enough time to forget my way again!
The staff and doctors were extremely pleasant and efficient I am happy to report.  As you can see, my thumb is better now.:-))

They usually are great. I think that any grumpiness or shortness with a patient/visitor will be due to an understanding or they have been dealing all night with drunks with bottles embedded oin their heads that don't want to be treated but want a fight with someone, or the political situation is unbearable, but I digress into politics (at the dinner table indeed >:-o )

I think Hospitals are very vernacular in their design, especially the older ones that have grown over the decades with annexes and additions to accomodate more equipment and wards etc. I remember St Richards in Chichester being a warren! I am pleased to hear that your thumb is on the mend Mr Nemo :-))

Cost of parking? The trust in Hull charge staff £25 a month for staff parking, sounds great? Well they have a workforce bordering on 8000 across two hospitals and several outlyer units. BUT at both sites they only provide 360 parking spaces, the majority of spaces another 1600 or so are for visitors and patients.

Just a nice money earner for sure. My son is a nurse in Emergency Dept (casualty) his shifts are 11am to midnight - he has no chance of getting a staff parking bay and on many occasions has paid the £3 per day to use a NCP private parking site just up the road. You cannot use a patient bay even if you buy a  ticket. The car park is monitored and the private company running it for the NHS just loves to hand out £60 parking tickets!

But I digress. You will all find that new hospitals will be built on greenfield out of town sites - the accepted norm since 2010, the reason is that new laws mean that no hospital unit can be higher than 3 floors above ground, so they will spread over a huge area rather than going upwards - another reason for hitting button 6 in the lift when you want the ground floor, anything to subvert the building regs. No city centre brownfield sites would be large enough to accomodate such a build as a new hospital.

The one in Hull covers 100 acres at present and that is with a 14floor tower block of wards (built in the 60's) as well. You all know of ward closures due to various viruses? This tower block never has its upper wards closed to patients, there is always some beds (side rooms) occupied even if its closed for deep cleaning which normally means the wards is empty of everything. The reason for this is because the trust has been notified that any closure of wards above floor 6 will be made permanent by the dept of health - so they never are empty!

This hospital surpassed its life expectancy in 2000, but no acceptable greenfield site was put forward, the Dept of Health would not release however millions to build a new hospital and of course when they do release some funds, the hospital has to be handed to the private sector but for the treatment of NHS patients. So its 16 years past its sell by date and with no real plans to replace it.

Of course this isn't unusual there will be many other hospitals around the country in a similar or worse position.

1) Park in the main car park - there may be a queue!
2) Exit car park on foot - turn left and walk up the hill slightly until you reach the covered walkway
3) You are now in the Millenium Wing

If arriving on foot or by bus - yes, you have to hack through the entire hospital. If you are mobile enough, walk up the road to the right of the hospital and follow the car park signs. You'll get to the Millenium Wing quicker that way. There are some shortcuts through the hospital, if you don't follow their instructions, but I do these from memory when I'm there. I couldn't tell you what do do right now.

You can tell that I've been there a few times, can't you!
