1/20 Severn Class
« on: May 21, 2016, 04:19:59 pm »

Hi

This is my first boat build so go easy!  :-)

The inlaws gave me the RNLI branded Severn Class for Christmas(with a bit of direction) I was aware of the short falls so I got to work straight away. At first I tried the set up in the picture below using 2 ESC , V tail mixer and 2.4Ghz Rx. Completely useless! The brake function on the ESC made the steering hit and miss!

So after much head scratching and internet searching I settled for this,

Not true to scale but works well, the battery goes in the modified original battery compartment. I have used an Mtroniks viper 10 amp ESC, M400 motor driving a 30mm 3 blade nylon prop , FlySky tx, cooling jacket is home made (and works!)  Rudder is a small brass one with a .5kg servo all mounted on some 3mm ply.

Once the propulsion was done I repainted the whole model using a mixture of Halfords rattle cans and humbrol enamels applied with my air brush. Also cut a hole in the deck to allow some access when it is screwed on.

She wears the markings of the Torbay life boat which are all from model flags.

Then I got a bit carried away and fitted some lights, which will be switched in the future.

And here she is  dead in the water at Clacton after the first cheap ebay 380 motor over sped burnt out after 5 mins!

She seems to be fairly stable in the water, turns well, quick enough all though may try 3 s and above all she didn't  sink! The first time I took her to Maldon a stock one was there and lads parents could not believe the difference, and asked loads of questions!

Thanks for looking

Jon

Looks good :-))
I have often been tempted to get one as a quick build while my 1/12th scale version is under build.

Whoever did the artwork for the box got it a bit wrong though as a 1:20th Severn lifeboat should be 850mm long as it's a 17 metre boat. I reckon the model you have is closer to 1/35 scale.

There is a couple of chaps here converting the Airfix 1/72 model kit to radio control. Now that is a small model!

They are marked as 1/20th scale, which is also wrong as the hull shape was altered at the stern.

Don't worry, we all know what the boat is about, it was designed as a toy, we make t better

So, my Severn class has been gathering dust in the garage for a while now rotting away, I decided a while ago I wanted to build another one with twin props and rudders. After hunting around on Ebay and gumtree I found one with broken motors very cheap !

Made a start on it this week.

Motors and steering gear all done. Quick test in the bath and all worked as it should.

With a bit of artistic license and some odds and from the spares box, have made the stern a bit more interesting,  not perfect I know but should look ok from the shore , if you squint !

The Severn re boot is coming on nicely, sticking to what I know and can do , ie airbrushing, humbrol 18 enamel and mr color leveling thinners.

Windows are as per the original as these were the main thing wrong with the finish of the first attempt

So all the new running gear, electrics inc lipo, weigh pretty much the same as the stock parts, which means I have enough spare to fit a bow thruster!

Built up the mast today mostly from the spares box, all the white styrene and aluminium is what I have added again not 100% accurate but will look from a few meters!

It breaks down in to 4 parts for storage /transportation

So here is the mast after some paint, and chopping half an inch off it, after I realised it was to tall.

Have been busy on the severn class lately. Have started to replaced all  moulded plastic railings with some that are a bit less toy like.

Oh yes, those railings look SO much better. As you say, much less toy-like.  Amazing how much difference a relatively small change can make.   :-)) :-))

I'm a newbie to mini-severn.  Read up about everything.  Think I have most things sorted apart from battery (Ni-Mh for me).  Nice build blog to follow -I hacked mine a fair bit.

Ferny,
That's a cracking little Severn and a vast improvement on the original. You should be proud of the finish and I can see a few folk following your lead!
Congrats.
