Electric drill motors
« on: August 07, 2007, 11:27:49 pm »

Yet again the batteries for my rechargeable electric drill have failed - could be because I don't use it often enough, but it is a few years old. It is of course cheapper to buy a new drill from Aldi than get new batteries, so the drill is scrap. Has anyone used a 12 v rechargeable drill motor in a boat? Have these motors any typical characteristics? I feel a destroyer coming on....

Measure the motor and count the poles.  It will probably be a 380 or 385.  They are 38mm long, with the 385 having 5 poles.

Does this mean a 380 has no poles?? ??? ::) ;D :D ;)

TT

You don't understand that a 385 is called a 385 because it has 5 poles, while a 380 is called a 380 because it has ......three...??

I seem to remember someone explaining that Mabuchi use the last digit 3 to indicate a 7 pole motor - or something equally as unfathomable and  inscrutably oriental....

You're nearer to them than we are, anyway. Why don't you take a bus-ride or make a local call and ask 'em?

My old Bosch 'lekky screwdriver has been superseded by a bigger, new Bosch screwdriver/drill.

But what strikes me about both these is the immense amount of torque they put out through their gearboxes. Were I sailing R/C boats, and wanted the basis for a servo winch, I'd save my £££'s and convert the old one, I think.

In Australia the electric motors in cordless drills seem to be, either mabucchi or johnson, and they will work very effectively in a fast model boat, no longer going through a gearbox they turn quite quickly, and I have also used one complete with gearbox as a sail winch in an A Class Yacht, and in any wind you can close the sails without changing course.........

I've now disassembled the drill... the motor is 70 long by 42 dia, and the 2-speed gearbox is as long again. It calls itself a Johnson 70004, and seems to have 5 poles.  I think I'm going to have to make a slim spanner to get the chuck and hammer mechanism off it, as the old allen key in the chuch and hammer aren't doing the trick. I suspect this would drive quite a large boat, but I fear the torque wouldn't suit a slim destroyer hull.  The battery pack consisted of 10 sub C cells. I took the batteries down to the council tip and asked if they accepted Nicads -"just tip 'em in the general waste, mate". Anyone for a house built on poisonous landfill?

If you keep the gearbox on the motor it makes for an ideal towing winch in a model tug...
That is what we use for the working winch in our tug-towing tugs...
The torque is good for pulling the tow rope back in at a nice steady speed...
Here is a picture of one installed in my Shoalbuster type tug...

Seems that most of the drill motors i have are johnson's and they work a treat i have got one in a 1960's telectra hull and it goes quite well . the other advantage is if you still have the batteries they can be stripped down, and you have also got the charger !

I had one which was a 550 size 9.6 volt motor.
I put it in a 36 inch MTB and she went very well.
