Visit to the Vulcan aircraft Robin Hood Airport Doncaster
« on: June 06, 2016, 09:42:33 am »

I visited the site last week and took just a few shots of this most historical aircraft. The V I P tours are well worth the extra cost. But larger group tours are also available. First picture shows the old R A F hanger  used to store the Vulcan fleet. Five hangers are situated on site. Second picture is the Vulcan hanger reception. This aircraft along with Victor and lighting must be rated some of the best aircraft ever built in the u k. I hope the Vulcan will be open for many years  allowing people to see this very remarkable aircraft more to follow.

The old girl is being looked after in her retirement in a fantastic hangar. Thanks for sharing the pictures Stan.
I remember back in 2010 at the Leuchars Battle of Britain air show a team of aircrew in black flight suits arrived in our billet and I was one of the few who recognised who they were! I had a brilliant chat with Martin Withers about the Vulcan and the Black Buck Raid. Lovely man and still has great affection for the great 'aluminium cloud'! :-))

Is this the last remaining Vulcan, or are there any others still intact anywhere?

Yes, the others that I'm aware of which haven't flown since RAF retirement are at IWM Duxford, RAF Museum Cosford, Bruntingthorpe?, and Coventry Air Museum.

A couple of years ago I was at the battlesite at Naseby, just off the A14 and she flew straight across us, down the valley and up the other side. The sound was glorious.

There was! and hopefully still is a Vulcan XM594 at Newark air museum, to stand next to one is a bucket list thing, to see is to believe and tip your cap at those who flew them.

Some more pictures. I was amazes how small the pilots seats were.  With all five crew members on board it would have been very tight. The picture of the instrument panel was not taken in the cockpit  just a picture of the real thing .Check out the 1950/60 flying suites finally I just had to check out those pilots seats

Strange plane to me the Vulcan. I can see why people like it I think but it really does nothing for me. I have seen quite a few displaying as well, I remember the last year or so of service as a kid and off course have seen this one at a number of air shows.

Just looked like a flying triangle to me though.

Personally I like propellers but they have to be radial engine driven and 4 of them is perfect.  :-)
I'm really looking forward to the first flight of this one since 1955. They have fully restored the plane and now have an airworthiness certificate from the FAA so it should happen any day now.  :-)

What I like is the fighter ability in such a big aircraft, you can see that Avro designed this from the beginning as the pilot's joystick isn't like the standard bomber yoke style stick but much more like a fighter like a Lightning or the Hunter.
I saw her for the last time at RIAT 2015 where she did the standard V Bomber QRA take off. One of the aircraft the USAF were always jealous of.

(One of the aircraft the USAF were always jealous of.)

And therein lies the rub.

Even though it has no propellers it was a great aircraft.

You wonder what, if anything, gets into the minds of the decision makers, who always seem to make backwards, or non beneficial decisions but decry it is good for us, or we can't afford it.

Even here in Oz we are not immune, even though the RSL motto is, "The price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance".

And there's one at Carlisle airport which I drove past last week. (It's a spit from my Mum's house.)
