Dumb Ideas
« on: June 27, 2016, 07:44:33 pm »

This is an invitation to see who can come up with the dumbest idea, model boat related.

Here's my 'brainwave':  Instead of using 2Kg of lead weights to ballast your model, use big Neodymium magnets instead.  That way you can just pop the ship on the steel roof of your car for instant transportability.  %%

This was not my idea but it's right up there with "dumb"  Charging the batteries of a model submarine in situ  (without removing the watertight casing).
The resulting hydrogen explosion drove the sub 15 feet along a work surface and through a breeze block wall!

I can do dumb...years ago, the late Bernie Wood and I drove all the way up to Derby for a sub day. Got there, unpacked the car, got my boat on the bench, took the deck off ready to turn the radio on...then discovered that I'd left the transmitter back at home.   <:(

I've often seen folk struggling with big heavy tugs, so my idea is to use aluminium for ballast because it's much lighter.  O0

Using the magnets, it might be OK driving north and south, but I foresee a problem going east or west.

Drill a hole in the bottom of your boat so that if you get a leak the water can get out easily. Simples!

Now that's the kind of genuine "dumb idea" I was prompting for.  Excellent  :-))

If you do carry a yacht on the roof rack,
leave the sails up to save fuel and assist braking.

ah but if you place your boat crossways over the roof instead of longitudinally...you'll be ok for going east to west so long as the bow is turned to north. lol

Nice one Andrew  :-))
Suggestion:  Cant you just swap over the red and black wires on the motor, the same as you do when you need to reverse one of a pair of model boat motors ?

Might be an age thing, but -
I changed a windscreen wiper a few days ago.  Surprised at the colour of the blade (green).  Went on easily, but it was better at rearranging whatever was on the screen than removing it.  I decided to check the green blade for cleanliness and eventually it started to slide.  The black blade that was revealed works a lot better than its cover did.

This could be in the medical section but on sunday I impaled my arm.

Lifting my 25kilo pillar drill off the bench to get a bit more work space, I lowered it to the floor and about 6 inches from touching down and stooped over, I impaled my arm on a stainless steel rod poking from under the bench. I couldn't stand up because of the weight, I couldn't let go because of the distance, all the while feeling the rod going a little bit deeper.

Shouting for swimbo din't work so eventually I had to drop the thing, then un - impale myself, no blood to speak of just a deep hole! Now that is dumb!

do not do this, carrying cylinder head off Cummins 220 not big but heavy, could not quite get it on the bench so had to lift a bit higher and right up to the metal bench ,angle iron edge , get the picture ,men's bits now on bench  because had to reach up and tight up to the bench ,( stop laughing) then put cylinder head down rather heavy .You do not have to guess much to no the outcome ,STOP LAUGHING.
