K&S tubing
« on: July 02, 2016, 01:11:18 pm »

Can anybody please tell me which size K&S tubing I need to make hinges with 18SWG piano wire?

Not really fussed if it's ally or brass.

Norman....when you do the simple calculations, you will see the nomination of #18 gauge piano wire @ 0.048" diameter is not a good selection for 1/16" OD x 0.014" wall, nor 3/32" OD x 0.014" wall K&S brass or copper tubing........... Derek

You could try these people, they do 'needle tube'. http://www.graysofkilsyth.com/salmon-needle-tubes.htm

The 1.8mm o/d tube may well be about 1.3mm internal, which would just fit your 18 piano wire.

Norman......just thinking outside the square.......

You could consider 1/16" OD [0.0625"] K&S brass round stock with K&S 3/32" OD brass tubing
These two sized elements provide a reasonably firm telescoping tolerance and both suitable for soft or silver soldering

The 1/16" OD brass material is only approx. 0.014" larger than your #18 gauge wire

Got there in the end ...

K&S 5/32" nominal ally tube + 18SWG piano wire makes me a satisfactory hinge  :-)

Just realised I typed 5/32" instead of 3/32" ...  :embarrassed:

And I now know that brass tubing in SWG sizes from 20 up to 6 is readily available  :-)
