new member needs some help
« on: July 09, 2016, 11:20:02 am »

Hi I am Jeff and have been modelling for many years, the help I need is what to do with a recent purchase from a flea market/antiques fair, its a tin plate boat 5 foot in length that had been stored in an out building for many years and was rusty, filthy and the inside full of cobwebs and bits of the boat that had come off, there was an ancient electric motor driving a single central shaft, so I thought great this will be a good project for a full restoration, when i got it home I realised that it had been got at before, probably in the 40 or 50s judging by the motor and wiring, and  there is evidence of it having twin shafts, found the other prop in the debris, the other thing I found inside was a metal buoy 65 mm long 45 mm dia with E.P embossed on the ends, now I know this to be the logo of Ernst Plank a German steam toy manufacture, what does the forum think,
should I do a complete restoration, or just preserve it.
It appears to be a torpedo boat destroyer

regards Jeff

Looks to be a model of one of the very early destroyer torpedo boats from around 1900; hard to say if it's supposed to be a British one or a German one. You might want to look through some of the early toy catalogs, could even be an early Basset-Lowke (sp).

However, it's certainly worth restoring.

Earnest Plank as you say assuming the boiler is original to the hull.

Restore or preserve is a moot point and down to the individual.

My view for what its worth is this is to far gone to just preserve so a sympathetic restoration is in order. If the boiler needs replacing to keep it safe please keep the original as part of its history :)

Rebuild and repair as needed, its too interesting to just become a collectable, tucked away in someones collection.

Hi thanks for your thoughts guys, sadly there is no boiler or steam engine, I have been checking through old catalogues but can not find anything of this size, Bassett-Lowke made some large ship models but they had wooden hulls, I know the big London toy shops like Gamages sold imported toys before WW1, the other thing I considered is that it might have had a clockwork motor, although it is 5 foot long it is not that deep, so any steam plant would have been small

Looks to be a 1900ish British built TBD judging by the turtle deck forecastle and the height of the bridge. German TBDs tended to have a very high forecastle compared to their British counterparts. Looks nice, hope you get her working :-))
