New member needs advice
« on: August 08, 2016, 06:16:20 pm »

Hello people  i,m new to this forum and need some help and advice please .
I have to complete an overdue build of a freighter vessel that was almost finished by my late father about 16 years ago.
Technology has advanced so fast and i think the batteries for the vessel are out of date nicad technology .
The length of the model is 4 feet .
I was thinking of Lipo and much more up to date technology power for the single propeller propulsion to give correct scale speed .
The ship is based on an genuine one that my father built from photos only !!! He also served on merchant shipsin the  50s in the engine room. Can anyone advise me in the above and possibly gearing down motor speed .
Should i go the old frequencies or the newer Ghz transmitters ???.
All help appreciated

Many thanks .

Personally, if it was my job to do,  I'd used sealed lead acid and a geared brushed motor.  The reasoning behind SLAs is that the weight of the battery (batteries) will offset the amount of ballast you'll need to use. The control gear is very much a matter of choice but 2.4 Ghz  will be well received at your local lake especially if some of the specialist sub guys are around.  Subs don't work well on 2.4Gig and tend to use Mega hertz frequencies.  Beside 2.4 is much more easily available and cheaper.  Just my tuppence worth!  Good luck with it and let's see some picture at some point.

Personally, I'd go for high capacity NiMH battery packs, they are also fairly heavy and will give a lower centre of gravity which is important for this type of model. You will also get a greater percentage of the nominal capacity as lead acids don't like being run down beyond 50%.

Thank you for your replies . I thought it might be better to use heavier batteries for ballast also and will seriously consider 2.4 ghz .
Uncharted waters as yet .
Should i use brushless motors or not and what about gearing of the motor for the prop to get a scale speed , i have no idea on this one at all .
And names of several good suppliers of equipment for model boating please .
The inside of the ship is bare wood , what should i protect it with ?.

Thanks again

Hi, is the boat built plank on frame, bread and butter etc.?
A picture would be a great help in giving you correct advice to help with your build/refurb.

Before we can advise you on motors we really need to know the size of the model and the weight of it approx. As opposed to brushed or brushless it really doesn't matter as both are now about the same price, but getting the correct size is important.  Gearing is a different story. Again the model weight will be a factor here. But if you get the correctangular motor gearing may not be needed. Also on modern 2.4ghz systems if you get a semi decent one like a spektrum dx6i then you can program the end stops and throttle curve eliminating the need for gearing to a certain extent. Again as long as you get the correct motor. What will be important here is you will need a powerful torque motor not a high revving fast motor.
If you upload some pics a more informative approach can be given as opposed to out present generalisation.

Hi ya there
Is your cargo ship which you are going to finish off, the same size /similar to the one in my photograph?   This one is round about 4 foot long and as you can see in the other photograph – I am powering mine with an MFA motor driving a 4 blade 50 mm diameter prop and using a 6volt 10 amp gel cell battery to help with ballasting the hull.

hi ya there
JPG is the best way and keep them on the small side, about 800 x 400 and if you have a look at the bottom where you type, you will see the attachments bar and other options, click on them and that leads you to putting a picture on.

One of the best picture handling software packages is Irfanview.  You can easily change images sizes and  even edit colours , etc.  If you never seen it before you'll be amazed how good it is and the best part is that it's completely free to download.
