Best material for water cooling coils?
« on: August 22, 2016, 09:43:46 pm »

I'm having trouble finding the right replacement motor for my boat, the only one I've found so far that perfectly fits the bill doesn't have any kind of water cooling, so I'm thinking about just wrapping some coils of something around and hopefully keeping it cool by having water running through it.
My question is, what will work best for ease of bending and also keeping the motor cool?
Is their anything that works better than everything else.
I was initially thinking of copper, but having never done it before, I'm unsure how/if it will work.

"copper" brake pipe works well.... should be able to get some from you local motor spares place

I say copper but it's probably not actually copper anymore

Thank you for the prompt reply.
Only 3quid on eBay for 50cm with a 4cm bore, which I think is correct, so I'll get that ordered along with the motor  :-))

4 cm bore?...that is 40 mm bore.... %) probably a similar diameter to the motor

Read the fine print.....electroless copper plated steel tube may in fact have a surface deposit of 5 microns....you may also find the actual flash coated copper coating will crack or shatter when bent <*<

K&S products from your Hobby store will have 1/8" or 5/32" OD copper tubing. After annealing you could wind this around a wooden former with very little deformation

Aluminium is also most effective in the transfer of temperature +/- gradient......you can purchase sets of tubes or shrouds to suit a range of motor casing diameters ...these are also relatively in expensive and are complete with the inlet & outlet barbed coupler fittings to suit the silicone tubing

That was a typo on my part lol, it's 4mm!
Thanks for the advice too, as I've already ordered it all, I'll give it a whirl and do some temp checking as I go :) if I run into any issues then I may look at a premade one.
The motor mount comes part way down the motor so I gambled on making my own for the best fit.
