Fitting schottel units to hull.
« on: August 25, 2016, 04:01:18 pm »

Hello all,

Just wondering if any1 has any experience or advise for me fitting the schottel units, especially where the schottel protrudes the hull, best material for bonding and sealing ect.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

The last time I used them I sealed around them with Isopon P40, that's the car body filler with the chopped strands of glass mat embedded in it. But it all depends on what the hull is made from, mine was a grp hull, if its a styrene or timber hull there will be different methods. But these methods will generally use an epoxy glue of some description.

Maybe Tug Kenny will happen along and let you know how he sealed his schottels into his Seabex One.

Hi,

Just as a bit of info some epoxy brands do not dry rock solid and are difficult to sand when 'set' and have weakened over time  >:-o . I tend to go with the DEVCON types for hull penetrations.

It's the outer shafts that have to sealed into the hull.   Mine were plastic tubes into a wooden hull, so I epoxied them from the inside.

I cannot report on their effectiveness as I no longer own the ship.

Hope this helps
