My first yachting experience.
« on: August 27, 2016, 01:13:25 am »

Just thought I'd post a little video here of my first time using a Yacht.
It's my first Joysway Dragonforce (65 I think?) and my lesson from him was, dump the yacht in the wet stuff, here's the transmitter lol.
Hope you enjoy :)

I thoroughly enjoyed it though. I didn't want to hog it, when we had power stuff to run as well, so probably only spent a total of about 10 minutes on the water. But I found it very rewarding, you really have to think about your inputs and get it right for it to move. That technical side of it was great for me :)

Overall, I did enjoy it though  :D

Controlling a yacht is a very satisfying experience.
I can sail a yacht for a few hours and feel totally
relaxed, whereas a powered boat bores me after a few
minutes.

Sailing a yacht requires skills that you learn by sailing, no book will tell you what the wind will do next that's what makes it so interesting.  ok2
I've been a 'stick & hanky' (as Pirate on here calls us) since day 1, started with a 575, went up to a Marblehead & now race a Micro Magic.
I've still got the 575 & the 'M', but have converted the 'M' into a semi scale for pleasure sailing.

Watched your video & noted that the mast looked as if it was straight, try a little tip from me, put a small amount of tension in the backstay so that it creates a very slight backwards curve in the mast, this will help with the shape of the mainsail & allow you sail better into the wind.  :-))

Welcome to the ranks of the 'peaceful' sailors.  :-)

As a sailor of over 30 years and owner of various full-size yacht types I had to retire due to health problems and took to models instinctively and with basic knowledge of the 'points of sailing' (which all model yottie's should know) I found model yachts delightfully easy to sail as I started with a ARTR type of small yacht. The pure magic of watching your small vessel answer to your controls is never-endingly satisfying to me and I know from comments, how enjoyable it is to non-sailing watchers. I concur completely with Ned, as there is a peaceful and enjoyable satisfaction that I think cannot be found in any comparable hobby. But that's just me!  :-)) Lovely video that - says it all.

Thanks for the comments chaps.
I will take your advice on board when I buy my own, unfortunately this was just borrowing a friends for the experience, but funnily enough my local model shop has just took in the exact same yacht my friend has, so I may go and get that.
They also have a Proboat Ragazza, which looked really nice indeed, but after doing some measurements, it won't fit in my Dads car without disassembling it, and I don't want to do that everytime I want to go and use it, so will aim for something a little bit smaller.
The Dragonforce will be getting a viewing as soon as I can make it down to the model shop :)

The Dragon 65 is a very nice boat, it can handle most wind speeds & should give you a lot of fun for a reasonable outlay.  :-))

Well this one is up for sale at £90, RTR, with a stand, which is handy.
I could probably get a tenner off that being a shop regular.
For £80, it's got to be worth the gamble, if I don't like it long term, then it's not a huge investment :)

DF65 before the Regazza anytime.
The Dragon sails like a dream.
The Regazza like a nightmare.

Well thanks for the info, that certainly pushes the 65 way ahead lol.
Factor in price and the fact my friend sails one so he could help with set up possibly.
Shall have to go and get that 65 from the shop when it's open again  :D
