3D 1/24 Oerlikon Gun.
« on: August 30, 2016, 02:32:14 am »

Hi,
Just a comment on 3d printed 1/24 scale Oerlikon guns on my ASR model.
I have noticed that if you look at the side view of the gun the barrel is starting to curve down.
When purchased barrel was straight.

Graham, what material is the gun printed in? I have read somewhere that some materials will absorb moisture over time and can sag or warp. I will try and find the article.

Graham

Is it possible to insert a thin brass rod down the barrel ?
....or as an alternative glue brass rod to the underside of the barrel, more or less out of sight, painted to blend in.

Regards,

Ray.

Absorbing moisture and changing shape does not bode well
for the Marine Modelling Environment. >>:-(

Some of the print filaments (PLA for one) are susceptible to to heat and can soften, warp and change shape. Think direct sun, very warm car etc.

Although I do have a 3d printer and am using it a fair bit, I am not at the point yet where I believe it to be a replacement for fine detail modelling.

The stronger, more heat and warp resistant filaments for the most part require higher print temps out of the range of a lot of home printers.

I would think that any of the commercially printed parts would be done in high end filaments, given the price you pay for them. Having never had one done though, I don't know what places like Shapeways would use for filament.

One would hope that the filament/item is fit for use.

As Ned has pointed out, for marine environment. O0  O0

Graham,

Doesn't bode well as any "plastic" in the open has to be UV stabilised or covered up as it will deteriorate over time.
Hence why UV stabilised plumbing and drainage pipes, fittings, etc are available for exposed locations.
