spot the deliberate mistake
« on: September 01, 2016, 05:22:16 pm »

Saw this headline on one of the internet news papers today.........something, doesn't quite ring true.

"If you’ve never heard of a Vulcan XH-558, you’re truly missing out. It’s a beautifully designed reconnaissance aircraft built by Avro for Great Britain."

I wish those that wrote these stories actually did some research before they put finger to key board.......makes them look a right proper narnna.

But can you imagine the size of the cameras it could carry?

I'd rather it carry what it was designed to carry, lol.

Get your facts right Jim
It did in fact become a recce aircraft.
Wiki will explain as I can't be bothered
to link anything when you have obviously
jumped in without a clue.

Sorry ned, but it was designed to be our first line strike aircraft for nuclear defence.

What it became afterwards is neither here or there, and one can take what wiki says with a pinch of salt, as if someone had the frame of mind to do so, they could edit it to say it was designed to fly to the moon and back, such is their appalling history of being edited by anyone pre disposed to do so.

I was in the fleet air arm in the early 60's
At RNAS Lossiemouth which was the
Master Diversion Airfield for the  Vulcan,
Victor and Valiant.
I think I have a vague idea  what these aeroplanes
were designed for. 8)

You're both right lads!

Primarily all three V bombers were designed to be the first line deterrent for nuclear Armageddon however the Air Ministry of the late 1940s and 1950s also wanted more of all three aircraft. So in conjunction with strategic bomber they wanted a photo reccee and later on air tanker abilities.
The RAF is very good at getting as much capability from one airframe as possible, it even continues to this day with the A400M having a mounting bracket in the cargo bay to fit a rotary launcher in case of all out war. This isn't even secret its mentioned and drawings are  in the Alternative V Force books I mention in another thread.

The headline isn't really correct because it's not what the aircraft is famous for or used primarily for either.

Ah yes, remember many a long hour spent fitting out many aircraft types for photo recce, including Canberra, Valiant, Victor,Phantom, Jaguar, Harrier, and one or two better still left unsaid, never did a Vulcan though. All many more years ago than one cares to remember.

Technically the Vulcan ended its life as a Reconnaissance aircraft and Tanker. In the mid seventies the Navy developed the K11 Code for use between Gannets and Buccaneers. This was effectively Battleships where K11 was the centre square of a grid. The Gannet would put out a broadcast which enabled the Buccs to go in radio and radar silent. This was taken up by the RAF who used the Vulcan in its MRR (Maritime Radar Reconnaissance) role. This was eventually taken over by the Nimrod which had superior equipment and the ability to track the attacking aircraft and effectively give radar guidance. It was probably about this time that we also used the Vulcan as a Tanker but my Log Book just says AAR (Air to Air refuelling) Only in later years it seems did I annotate the entry with what the Tanker was! During my last tour with the RAF in the mid eighties it was all Victor and VC10 tankers.

I've always thought the Victor was the better looking aircraft. I think the Vulcan is an ugly brute, regardless how un-PC that is to say out loud
