Micro blow torch
« on: September 08, 2016, 11:46:42 pm »

I'm needing to do some brazing on stanchions  etc.
I have the normal massive blow torch but am looking for recommendations for a small torch.

A few choices Klunk.......depending on the size of the stanchions.....

The pencil torch was about $12.00, the larger but still hand held approx. $18.00...both refillable.....both adjustable flame,  both rated to 2000 [F] degrees flame temperature. The largest canister mounted torch is only used for preheat soaking if silver soldering

Using heat sinking including wet kitchen paper towels is a great way of soldering.....I have even immersed a small copper tube component in a 4" vice & then placed the vice in 2" of water as a heat sink.....

The possibilities' are endless  O0......Bakers soldering flux is also a good standby  :-))... Derek

I'm looking for a pencil torch one. I have most of the others.  Heatsinking is the easy part. I've heard night mares about pencil ones. I have one at present but it doesn't hold gas! Is there a decent brand I could buy as all the ones I see are cheap and nasty and run off lighter gas.

I'm well into model steam engines and use a pencil torch a lot. I use this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Roburn-Butane-Micro-Blow-Torch-MT-770-MT-790-/152026003616. I can anneal pipe upto about 3/16" put all the connector ends on and even solder a small boiler endcap back on. Highly recommended. I use a 220gramme butane refill, a job lot of 10 for $7 at Mitre 10 a couple of years ago!

I own a Dremel one it's fantastic if a little expensive at £30-£40 but the heat is adjustable and you get a few attachements to aim with most things model related soldering is easy and brazing brass together has never been so easy just don't forget to get decent solder and flux

I have the camping gas one, as far as I can tell its still working on its original cylinder, but the cylinders are tricky to get nowadays

This is the one I use and its great.  It has a micro blow torch, soldering tip and hot air tip for heat sink wrapping.  I swear by mine and I've never had a moments trouble with it either.

As for the cheap pen type one's - well I threw mine away when the handle caught fire only on the second time that I had used it  <*<

I found the cheap pen like ones do not hold a second fill of gas. Its something to do with the cheap nasty valve so don't go for these.
