Evening everyone my name Mal- im new to the forum but i have built a couple of rc boats a few year back- a perkasa and a dolly.p
I've been away from the hobby a while and looking for a project to build with my son.
I really fancy having a go at building a plank on frame boat,
Can anybody recommend a good entry level boat to build?
How difficult is it to actually build a wooden hull?

The big trick with plank on frame is to take your time.
Have a look at the masterclass section, there are a few there done on p o f. Pictures tell a thousand words!

You might search for threads here and on RCGroups.com for build logs of such boats as the Dumas kit Jim Wilder II.  I have built this one.  It is a plank-on-frame hull, 32" LOA with a fairly simple superstructure.  There are many others, of course.  There are many good tips on how to build and plank the hull.  Hope you enjoy it.

So ive looked at many threads and decided that maybe pof is going to be a bit out of my comfort zone and wont really give my son much to do(who's 10year old).

We have decided to buy a plan of the Veleta by Vic Smeed which is all balsa construction- this i think will be alot better for my son to get hands on and get used to using tools/ glues/ sanding.

So we are off to our lhs on saturday with a list of materials and bits and bobs needed to get started and we cannot wait.

Can any body suggest which way is better to transfer the plans to the wood- would it be easier to copy the plans and cut them out or trace onto card for templates?

     I would suggest that if your flat-bed copier produces accurate copies, then it would be quicker than tracing, but which ever method is used to copy plan parts, stick the paper copy onto thin card and then your novice builder will be able to make replacement parts easily when he/she make the inevitable occasional mistake in cutting or assembling.  Also they will always have those templates to build another model.

Hi Mal, dont buy special card, use cornflake type packets, even if you have to steal the box and leave the contents in there bags, see the gaffer first !!!!
