Been at the hospital all day
« on: September 18, 2016, 05:46:34 pm »

Hi all got back from hols yesterday and at 5 this morning my missus lept out of bed with cramp then decided she needed the loo, then I heard a crash lept out to find her unconscious on the floor of the toilet with blood pouring from her head, I phoned an ambulance and after about 5 mins she came round and was very confused, the paramedics arrived then 2 more then an ambulance they managed to get her down the stairs on a special stretcher, she's broken a vertebra in her back got crush injurys to her back and concussion, but, they still sent us home said it's a stable fracture, I've never seen her in so much pain, I have to say I was scared, don't know what I would do without her.

What rotten luck, keep a very close eye on her and don't hesitate to call the medics out again if you feel you need to.

I can't believe they sent her home with any spinal injury >>:-( They should have kept her in overnight for observation at least. If you don't need to go back this evening, make sure you ring your GP first thing and get a home visit from him. He may decided to refer her back to a spinal consultant for further treatment.

Thanks for all the kind comments, I will be contacting the doc in the morning, I wasn't happy about that, my missus loved it, hates "making a fuss" she would say that if her leg was falling off.

It may be stable but it is still a multiple spinal injury and while home is comfy, it is also not suitable for rapid transferal to somewhere to deal with any spinal bleeding or bruising that might act on the spinal cord. As we well know, these organs are the central control and support elements that give us quality of life.

I wish Mrs KP the very best, and do make sure she does not try and get back to norml too soon as I would hate for her to have a relapse or aggravate the exisiting injuries  {:-{

A sad reflection of todays NHS, before she would have been fussed over by several nurses, doctors would have been over her like a rash and matron and professor Spratt would be in charge (carry on nurse!).
Now your lucky if you see a nurse or a doctor let alone someone to care for you properly. This is not a dig at the doctors or nurses, they do an absolute superb job, its down to the greedy fat cats whon now run our care system. So jn you go, sticky plaster applied and out you go and any further problems see your overworked GP, and if you need to see a specialists join the 6 month waiting list!!!!!!!!!!
Makes my blood boil how successive goverments have allowed this to happen, they should be accountable for its demise.
Hope your Mrs recovers quickly.

Well I'm pee'd off with hospital gp agrees she should have stayed in, but that she seems stable enough now, what I'm really pee'd off with (my daughter in law is a Physio) we should have been given things like a bit you put on the loo to make it easier for Pam to get on and off the loo also the couch, they should have assessed our house for her to get around, for instance (a new experience for me) I had to shower Pam this morning, with a broken back an standing in the shower, she was being very brave but it hurt her a lot ( becky my daughter in law says we should have been given a chair which sits in the bath so she can sit down also a non slip matt)  I thought I had a great idea and would use one of the plastic chairs from the garden but it won't sit stably in the bath, I'm really quite cross. I'm now going to make a seat which fits over the top of the bath out of an old kitchen work top.

I am sorry to hear about your wife's mishap.
I know a lot of this stuff should have been provided, but it isn't expensive. If you have the spare cash, you can usually find a store that specializes in mobility equipment. They should be able to advise you things that will make life more bearable, now. Without having to wait for the NHS.

Try speaking to the Physiotherapy dept at your local Primary care centre, they should be able to provide you with  a 'Golden' phone number that can provide help in this situation or at least advise you on what can be done.

Mabey with help from your GP ,contact with your local Ocupatational Health department there might be of assistance with bath seat or raised toilet seat .I know it a long shot but its worth a try.

Have you tried your local Red Cross ? here in Chelmsford we have loaned various items from them for my Mother in law and Mother in the past. All they ask for is a donation. Maybe they may have what you are looking for.

Hope wife gets well soon

Hi all my daughter in law is a physio and phoned pam today and had a long conversation with her, she knows the layout of our house very well and is going to organise what she thinks we need. Thanks so much for all the kind advice and suggestions, so hopefully things will get easier, now I really must get back to the ironing hoovering and cooking dinner (never knew how indispensable pam is, here's hoping for and extra speedy recovery)

I don't understand how women do it, after a days work then doing all the house work, I've been doing it for 3 days and I'm knackered, I have a new appreciation of just how much Pam does.

(I manage to sneak up 3 or 4 times a day to check on her ) but even so, I take my hat off to her.

I know its no consolation but hospitals just don't give out equipment at 'source' because much of it never goes back! What should have been done is that a referral to the Occupational Therapy department should have been made - then they would have come out and made an assessment and then arranged the loan of any equipment that may have helped your wife.

Trouble is in this age of cutbacks etc, OT's are usually run off their feet keeping up with the elderly population to even get to referrals from the Emergency Department, again no consolation for your wife.

A couple of years ago I tore knee ligaments and had a nasty break in a leg. I needed a brace to stabilise it yet allow some movement. Hull Royal has a catchment area of almost 1 million residents (not just Hull but the whole of east yorkshire up to Leeds and as far north as Newcastle. How many of these frames were available? 0! they only possessed 2 and both were in use. I ended up in a plater cast for 8 weeks and then needed physio for another 8 weeks to regain movement, which would not have been needed if the frame was available.

Sad to say the NHS has finite resources and nothing will improve while it is starved of cash to operate.

Once again I hope your wife improves and gets back to her feet sooner rather than later.

My wife was born with a congenital bone problem, which, although annoying at times, only became a problem when our second son was born 46 years ago. Since then, her bones have slowly degenerated and she is now almost completely housebound and suffers constant agonising pain. Mobility, of sorts, is by crutches and a wheelchair.  In all our years of operations, falls, fractures, and countless hours of hospital visits, the one thing that shines through our misery is the assistance given by our local Occupational Health people - as mentioned above. Your wife should have access to all that we have been given, from shower-seats, raised toilet seats, grab-handles, even a sloping ramp to our back door to overcome the steps, was provided without charge. At her worst, she was provided with 3 carers per day for months on end to help me out with her needs. Do not hesitate to ask for these aids!  BTW, she fell and broke her shoulder last January and after attending A&E was sent home despite her grave and long-standing disability, but that's the way things are ! Our best of luck to you and your wife - we know how things are for you both.

Sorry to hear that, as they always say there is always someone worse off than you, you have my sympathies, hopefully pam will have a full recovery, not so for your poor missus, I now have some very small idea of what you're going through, thanks to all for the kind words and advice.

Hi all I and Pam would just like to thank roymattblack for this.

Very kind of you.
I was looking at our hols pics and it dawned on me just how quickly things can change, this is Pam 48 hrs before

She won't let me take a pic now but she went from the vibrant funny person you see there to laying on her back unable to do anything with out a lot of pain in 48 hrs, live life in the now, you don't know what's round the corner.
