Rocking horse
« on: October 01, 2016, 07:57:58 am »

I've been away for a bit as I was busy with another project. I've been making a rocking horse. Apparently rocking horses are measured from chest (not sure about terminology) to rump and not nose to rump so when I started I thought I was building a slightly smaller version. But it turned out big enough for me to ride  %) ....... That's the story for the defence your honour :police:

Anyway it's finished now so unless I decide to build something other than another boat I may be reporting back for duty soon. Although one of the things I really want to build is an electric powered 1989 batmobile. Unfortunately before I build that I have to find someone who wants to buy it as it will be too big to keep. Like the horse which also has to go. At least I get to keep my boats, although big they at least get past the OH size regulations (just)  {-)

Anyway here she is...... She's called Sugar because she's white and she's sweet (ahhhh %) )

Looks great, they had a rocking horse, very similar to yours, in the Cottage Hospital in Walingford; when I was a very small child. Was it from a plan only, if so can we have details please.
Was it from a semi-kit (with all of the ironwork provided) or maybe even the head.
Or was it a full kit? If so, how much?

Thanks guys......

Nivapilot...... Glad you like it!

Tiger... I bought two books one of which included scaled down plans, then I combined some features from one book with some from the other and looked at a lot of photos on Google. All the horse is shaped from wood by myself, no kit or parts of a kit. The legs are made of a very hard wood with a pine exterior cladding for the muscle detail. The stand is made from Acacia which was sourced from a local boat builder (so there is something to do with boats) and all the hinges, brass caps, swinger bars, and the horse hair was bought from the nice people at Margaret Spencer's rocking horse specialists in England.

John44 ..... Thanks........ I'll have a search for that  U2

We have one almost identical in shape to yours, but much smaller, which we bought when our oldest son was about 6 or 7, he's now 55. I renovated it when our first grandson was born, and he's now 24 - time flies. The mechanism of ours looks very similar, but I must say that the head of yours is excellent, very lifelike. Beautifully made U2 :-))

John 44... I found it, very nice O0 ...... Judging by the stand it's a medium size horse? Well painted in traditional rocking horse dapple paint. Well done she's lovely.

Ballast..... If I do sell her  {:-{ you could be right

Peter..... Time does fly you're right so a few jobs around the house and then swiftly on to something new. I have one or two boats in mind but I think they will be future projects. I have certain things in my head that need to be built before all the time dries up......... I will be reporting back once I start something. Thanks for the compliments it makes all the hard work worth it. U2
