120mm side paddle wheels
« on: September 23, 2016, 08:26:15 pm »

Hi,   Does anybody know where I can buy some 120mm paddle wheels.   Have got a set of graupner 581 wheels but don't really want to try and adapt them.    Wheel set needed for HMS Volatile Tug.
   cheers

You could try this guy- http://modelengineerslaser.co.uk/ I enquired recently and he had a couple of designs one of which might have been that size.

Mike.....elde-modelbau make some very fine scale feathering paddle sets......the smaller is 130 diameter, however the lower blades [wood] could be reduced by 5 mm...........Derek

Evening bluebird.........yes a little expensive, however their 165 diameter wheel set is 1185 Euro........ O0

I have actually ordered 36 cast wheel blade reinforcement brackets [A1200-19] from this kit

Manfred from elde-modelbau has been extremely helpful

hi there Derek
It is a pricey business this model making - I think if I had spent that money on a set of paddle wheels I may be sleeping in garden shed with model wrapped around me neck :-)

On a serious side, I have had a good search on the Forums because I have read somewhere - someone made a set of paddle wheels from plasticard and they were pretty rigid and worked pretty well apparently.   I am still searching for the link.   I wonder if the guy who is after the paddles is anygood with a fret saw or a jewellers saw - cos I made a set of paddle wheels from 0.5 mm thick brass sheet - and 4 pieces of brass sheet 4.5 inches square - cost me £15 off ebay but fair comment a lot of elbow grease goes into the making of the paddle wheels.

heres a couple of pics of mine - I made them non-feathering

Evening John....& yes without stealing Mikes thread.........paddle wheel sets have been a very expensive & difficult issue to accept over the years

I have a set from a UK supplier which are expertly CNC cut, however the bolt size as supplied is approximately x 3 of scale which are now scrap value only >>:-( ...... courtesy of [Wav****y Models] [8 years ago I openly posted my experience with this supplier and his lack of help]

The ABS [plastic] wheel sets are cost effective, however what you see is what you get.........I decided not to use the same

I have since acquired a ~~78 year old [metric dimensioned with metric bolts (not BA)] brass wheel kit and am progressing with the [rimless] assembly which will be complimented with the 36 cast brass blade supports from  elde-modelbau ......the final wheel sizing will be ~~ 175 mm diameter x float blade width ~~ 75 mm

Tug Kenny made his wheels from plastic card in his Creole Queen build thread.

Hi Guys,   Thanks a lot for the feed back.   Some nice wheels there!!!   Have found that Kim at clydemodels will make a set of brass ones for £120.    But I think very similar to those wa..ly ones and uses 3mm screws.   Think I will have a go at making some from plastic sheet, but won't make them feathering.   Seems a shame though that there are loads of paddle tugs/steamers out there to make but there doesn't seem to be anybody willing to offer reasonable priced wheel sets, even plastic is OK if good quality.    I mean those german ones are beauties, but what a price!!!
    cheers

Seems there's an apparent market for laser cut plastic or 1mm ply paddle wheels if anyone has a laser cutter and the plans.  %) %) Brass is out of the question as the price of the laser cutter alone for cutting metal runs to tens of thousands of pounds, but for styrene/acrylic or ply one of the smaller lasers is man enough :-))

Hi Peter
Had a look at those on modelengineerlaser site,  but they are only 3.5" or 90mm in diameter.   Have asked Malcolm if he can do me a set larger, at first seemed reluctant, but came back with drawing which was spot on, so waiting for him to come back with confirmation that he can do it and how much.   So keeping fingers crossed.   Carrying on making my own at moment, just in case.

Received mine (145mm), very good quality but no assembly instructions and no nuts and bolts.   As I  am electrically rather than mechanically minded, it took me some time to get it all together, but with a little bit of ingenuity have now got some excellent paddle wheels.   Pete
