modelling books for victorian navy vessels?
« on: October 01, 2016, 08:05:48 PM »

Hi,

I am a newbie, and have an interest in the late victorian navy.

Can anyone suggest any books on modelling the ships, preferably to Large Scale please?

I have the 2 'Burt' books on the Royal Navy Battleships, and have just ordered the reprint of the 'Victorian Cruisers' book, due the end of October at a reduced price direct from the publisher, with who I have no connection, if there is any interest in it have a look on the Pen & sword website for further details.

I have only managed to find books published in the USA, which have somewhat expensive 'Air Mail' postage charges.

Thank You in advance.

You need to track down a copy of Brian King's 2001 book 'Modelling Late Victorian Battleships'

He also wrote a number of other books which featured his models.

Thoroughly agree with Colin, stunning step by step phases to build every conceivable item fitted to Victorian era warships.
If you look in the last 25 editions of Model Boats there is a stunning build of HMS Skirmisher by Dave Wooley, whilst in WW1 colours, the model is a truly awe inspiring representation of a Victorian cruiser.

Peter,
This link to the Model Boats website may be of interest. Brian King's build of HMS Devastation was featured in Model Shipwright (part one in Number 39 - sorry I haven't any further issues in the series).

Hi,

I now have a copy of the Brian King book (Modelling  Late Victorian Battleships ), found via the 'Waterstones.com' website and 'search' at the top of the page - they had listed a copy from the USA at 27.00 + 3.27 postage, in new condition.

The description is correct; and Thank You for your assistance.

Yours Peter.

Hi Thanks you for the link, that is very helpful' I wonder why they never added Part 1?

I tried via 'search' and it does not come up.

There's another book - "Thunderer, Building a model Dreadnought" by William Mowll (of HMS Warrior build fame) - which also has great detail and beautiful pictures to help.

Don't forget, there are build logs on the forum for vessels from that era.

You say you've got two Burt books, I thought he did three? Mind you, perhaps the last one is too late in period.
