Removing superglue from paint
« on: October 14, 2016, 11:38:50 pm »

Hi,
I've got a small amount of superglue on a painted finish (halfords spray).  Is there any way to remove it or polish it off?  It's not much but is in an obvious place.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

I doubt it I should possible, without a respray. I got some on an acrylic panel of a case and had to completely rebuild the case as the glue, "burnt" itself onto the surface.

Not removing but I've been told that if you spray a Matt or semi gloss varnish over it it'll be less noticeable

If it is a small area to touch up then it might be worth using the Halford's paint with a brush. Shake the can and spray a small quantity into the cap. Apply with a soft brush to the affected area but don't try to brush it out as it dries very quickly. If you are lucky the paint will blend in quite well. I have used this method to touch up the traces of glue that you inevitably get sometimes around the base of fittings when you stick them on - stanchions for example.

you can get sand papers of 3000 and 5000 grit
Just gently rub on the glue checking all the time . Your might get lucky .

If the resulting abrasions are not to deep and/ or expose the primer, then raflaunches varnish idea will fill the scratches. This is often done by aircraft modellers sanding parts of aircraft canopies. They spray or dip it in varnish and the mistyness and scratches dissapear. Just be careful and don't sand too hard.

If you catch it soon enough you could try Glue buster or a similar Superglue solvent. If it's a few days old however this may not touch it. I'll have a play around in the workshop tomorrow, bound to find a few drops on the bench somewhere!

Hi,

I have used T-Cut before to remove blemished left by superglue as long as it isnt a huge drop!

I've had a bit of a play with super glue and some Deluxe Materials Glue Buster. Slightly varied results depending upon what material the glue is on, painted or porous for example, and how old the glue is. Generally with fairly fresh glue you can get it to turn to a sticky gel at least and another couple of coats may clear a bit more. With really hardened stuff on the bench it didn't really want to know.

The conclusion is I think to give it a go. Glue Buster seems to be fairly harmless stuff, I've still got all five fingers after quite a few coats, so hopefully no lasting damage will result to the model.

Another alternative to removal is to cover up - this really depends on where the excess glue is, what type of model etc - i.e. fishing boat deck clutter, hull side fender hanging, coils of rope, all that sort of thing. Perhaps a crew member standing over it ?

Ray.
