points of view ??
« on: October 04, 2016, 11:00:33 pm »

Hi,
A bit off topic, but does anyone have any views on these De Agostini kits ?  I know over the time ( 2 years ) it looks like hundreds of pounds but they look larger scale and very detailed ! so I was wondering if they represent value for money  ? or should you look somewhere else ?  and where is this somewhere ??

Cheers

He's talking about subscription static kits like the Millennium Falcon.

And other De Agostini kits

Ahh, the 'Subscription build it yourself magazine's'. . .
I wonder how many of these (over priced) kit's ever get finished, there's been a few casualties on Mayhem that's petered out  during the build's , the plastic kit's are reasonably simple but the ship model's are skilled builder territory.
Hachete & De Agostini must be making money from them or they wouldn't continue . . .

As far as the ship kits go it is cheaper, overall, to but a kit outright. However, if you cannot afford the price in one go there is the option of  buying the magazine in weekly (whatever) installments. This is more expensive but does not require a large outlay at one time. There is another trouble though; the magazine seems to drag out the process as long as possible meaning you could well lose interest before the project is complete. Finally, it would appear that it is advisable to take out a subscription to the appropriate magazine to best ensure that you get the complete set, as they seem to disappear from the shops quite quickly after launch.

If you can afford it, buy the kit.

Hi. At our club exhibition and boat sale (St. Albans) we had a D' Agostino HMS  Victory, part built for sale all in many numbered packets, (no magazines) there was no way to check whether it was all there.

It was sold to the only person I know who could make sense of what was there.  This was nice as I had not seen him for a few years and we had spent several sailing holidays together.

I imagine that few regular modellers would build in this way.  Suggesting there are going to be lots of unfinished models or perhaps barely started, about.

Thank you Umi.

Fortunately we don't get too many of these things in OZ. :-)) :-))

As someone already mentioned buy the kit it is cheaper. O0 O0

At current interest rates it would still be cheaper to borrow money to pay for the kit. O0 O0

The other problem with these kits is you're commited for a couple of years - what happens when the next year's offering is way more interesting than the model you've already started?

Can't afford both......

:-)) :-))  Guess most people have much the same view as me then ?

I think the Victory kit is about £700 which seems quite a lot ! I have watched them building them on youtube and the detail is very high!!

Thanks for the thoughts guys :)

As a retired newsagent I advise you to stay well clear of these magazines.

Parts 1 to 6 are used to gauge interest and most  of them die at this point.  If they stay in production after issue 6, then they are liable to be killed off as soon as circulation drops and they begin to loose money.

Note that none of the magazines offer to refund your money if the series is not kept going until the end, they claim the editorial content is the subscription and the model part is a "free" gift"

Hi kinmel
you are probably right ! you see them when they are launched in the shops but then after a couple of copies you never see them again !! I think I will give them a miss.  I was looking at the victory on youtube some guy was building it and its massive !!

Cheers
