Propshaft in old boat siezed
« on: October 16, 2016, 02:39:08 pm »

Right, restoring an old boat that has been in storage since the mid 70's. Actually it's a caldercraft Joffre.  The problem is the although the propshaft actually turns, it's full of dried grease.  So how do I get the inner and outer apart?
Have got all the nuts and props off, can pull the prop out about 20mm wither way. Have turned boat on bow end and squirted wd40 into prop shaft. Anything else I can do?

I had a similar problem a while ago. I put the outer end in a variable speed battery drill and spun the shaft. Start slow and increase the speed slowly, while pulling the shaft gently out. Care and gentle persuasion are the watchwords.. lubricate as you go.
It worked for me, took about 5 minutes, and I had the ratchet on the drill set very low in case of a lock up.

Chas.
PS check the bearings afterwards, they might be shot and you will need to replace the lot, I was lucky.

I've stuck a soldering iron up the end, let it heat up a bit, twist and out it came!

The hot soldering iron is a good tip (sorry).  It is also good for removing metal screws from plastic structures.  I removed a screw from my flymo like this.

Can you get one end into the outer case so that you could apply some air pressure (from a DIY air compressor)?
Could be quite deadly with 100psi of air on the shaft
