Flower Class question
« on: October 17, 2016, 09:15:14 pm »

Hi fellas. I have bought (sorry not built) a completed HMS Snowberry and would like to refurb her as HMS Jasmine (K23). I can only find black/white photos but none of them show her in camouflage only grey. Can anyone tell me the paint numbers either Humbrol or Revell I will need to repaint the hull please?

Check out the  reply in this thread.

This may sound like heresy but I'am not convinced that it makes that much difference when dealing with greys! Given possible differences in paint stock on the original.  The visual effect of distance and type of film stock on the reference photo.  The "scale effect" on the model, etc .  It would probably be pretty close if you used any dark or light grey.

Brilliant guys thanks a bunch. I will now paint her grey (of choice) and refer all anoraks to you TailUK! Only joking but it's a relief to know that it isn't some difficult to find shade of grey. (Probably one of the 50 I suppose, best ask the wife)  ok2

I posted some RN colour guides to another thread.  They might be some help!

When I made my Snowberry I didn't want to bother with camo at that stage of my building experience, so I used a solid grey, Halfords grey plastic primer. I weathered it however using Humbrol Rust. I also used Black for the underwater hull.

Dunno if it's of any use but there are pics of Jasmine in camo.

No idea what but here's a fair shot.

Good Luck

The picture show Jasmine wearing Measure 22 camouflage so dates the picture post 41/42 as the RN didn't adopt the US scheme until after America entered the war.  The colour below the line is Dark Blue and the upper works are in Grey.

Hull sides In measure 22 would be navy blue 5n grey would be haze grey 5h decks deck blue 20b.As for below the waterline the Americans used Norfolk anti fouling red not sure if this had a number.

Don't think its Measure 22. The RN didn't use the American system of camouflage colours. Also Measure 22 would follow a horizontal line around the hull. The dark colour is clearly dipping towards the bow in the second photograph. It's more likely an Admiralty Standard scheme, my guess 507a and 507c, light and dark grey.
Good approximations in Humbrol would be 147 and 106, or at a push 147 and 67. As stated before, a good application of rust, grime and wear and tear will help with the overall look.

Measure 22 was used by the RN as "Admiralty Alternative" although they tended to use Dark Grey instead of blue.  It was primarily an Atlantic scheme.  I suspect that it was as a result of ships being refitted on the west side of the pond.
I've included a clearer pic of Jasmine

Thanks for all your info and help guys. It looks like Jasmine had several different paint jobs during her service so now I will have to decide on which one I want to go with. I can't find any history of her being across the other side of the pond for a refit though but somone might know different of course.  :-))

HI bridkid first picture shows U S S  Kidd in measure 22. It is quite clear the navy blue rises from the bow to the stern the rest is haze grey deck blue on decks. R N  vessels that went to the US may have had this scheme applied. After checking Jasmines history there is no mention of her going to the U S. Check out colour plate showing two tone grey scheme not sure if this relates to Jasmine hope this helps. I have included ships history

Many thanks Stan, very useful pics and info. I have got a detailed first 2 years history from Jim Hingston's diary who was the RNVR sub-lieutenant navigating officer.

This one I made earlier is actually Leyland floor paint, although I don't fancy walking over it!

It's possible that the pattern was changed in 1941.

Here's a photo of her side during a repair/rebuild in Birkenhead after a collision which shows the dark/light split.

Good Day All

This picture of HMS Jasmine is showing her in the Western Approaches colours, Main hull was white, the bow wave is light blue. I've attached a picture of HMS Bluebell and HMCS Sackville as a reference to the colour. For the colours have a look at this website http://steelnavy.com/rnchips.htm
