Russian Task Force
« on: October 21, 2016, 01:07:37 pm »

Just been looking at the BBC video of the Russian task force passing through the Dover strait: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-37725327

The carrier seems to me making as much smoke as the old pre Dreadnoughts that passed this way in 1905.

In a country where you are said to "go up" to London from the Peak District anything is credible. Anyroad up, m'duck, if you hold the map in the direction you're going then it is up.  :P

Colin, at least the Russians own an Aircraft Carrier with aeroplanes which fly :-) and they didn't have to purchase them from another Country.  It may smoke - but - hey at least it goes without breaking down - think about the new type 45s.

John, actually it is reported that it does break down frequently, apparently it always sails with a tug in company to avoid calling out the AA.  ok2

That would explain mention of the Russian tug, thought to be part of the convoy, which entered the channel near Ramsgate. Just a thought - if the aircraft carrier were to break down in the Med then where would they tow it to? Sevastopol or all the way back to the Baltic? I suppose it depends where the nearest parts dealer is.

Perhaps you have all forgotten that to-day is Trafalgar Day, wouldn't be interesting if there was to be a serious boiler problem on the Kuznetsov mid Channel. Which I think is odds on by the amount of smoke.

To-day is also the 5oth anniversary of Aberfan let us not forget.

It may smoke. It may even break down.......but I bet it can cause some serious damage if challenged... {:-{

Today apparently , looks like they have a pretty serious engineroom fire or at least a large fire in the funnel pipes , just hope none of the crew have been hurt but does look like she's off to Russia on the end of a rope being towed yet again

Um, er, that looks rather embarrassing Russia. Is it a case of get the thing on the water regardless as a show of prestige only?? I mean do we know if the aircraft even fly? It is all very well trundling them around on deck, but if they are as shakey as the Carrier then it is a bad show all round.

All the same, I agree that it would be tragic if any of the crew succumbed to the fire. Even today fire is still a major worry on any ship.

You do know right, they intend to run it aground off Turkey, just like they do on youtube, though I doubt it will get up to speed to be able to beach at the scrap yard.

The accompanying tug was shown as well out to sea yesterday morning http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid:4404011/zoom:10 so I rather suspect the photo might be a hoax.

So the fire was a put up job or the land was generated into the film? Interesting either wayas we know our russian friends excell in the art of 'Maskirovka'.

I imagine that the story about having a fire emergency is false.
However, I would hazard a guess that the photographer happened to
catch the ship as a exhaust plume was blown back over and across the ship.

Almost like that old black and white film with ian Carmichael and alister simms on one upmanship and the old jalope - and its bubbling soundtrack like in the alec guiness film of the chemist and the new formula for a textile coating (that soundtrack got around abit)

She doesn't go anywhere without Nikaloy Chiker as part of the Battle Group in case her engines pack up again. She may be big, she may be afloat, she may have aircraft on-board but she is 30 years old and a hulking pile of rust. She may be old and unreliable, as someone said already, we have some but no aircraft so one up on us. But last time I believe the Russians sent a fleet this way was before the WW1 and it shot up half the English herring drifters in the North sea at night thinking they were Japanese torpedo boats, they then went on to be destroyed by the Japanese fleet in the Yellow Sea action.

Not so dodes. I recall a Soviet fleet going down Channel back in the 70's when the carrier KIEV was the flagship.
It was very rough in the Channel and much amusement was gained watching the Russian deck-crew trying to stop the jets from sliding off the deck. The rusty and unkempt state of this(then) relatively new ship is somewhat mirrored by the 'smoky' carrier shown above.

It was interesting to see HMS Duncan in this shot as I was on the main-deck of HMS VICTORY next to a PO who piped DUNCAN out of Portsmouth on her way to intercept this present show of Russian naval 'strength'!

I know this may sound a bit cynical, but, was it wise to send out our new Type 45 Warship - cos according to reports; if they switch anything more than a light bulb on, on the bridge, it shuts everything down and she too sits on the water dead.  So, was there a British Tug accompanying her out too?

I do know it does sound terrible.

I think its time we got our act together with our Military Forces and give them some 'real' reliable stuff.  Instead of trying to penny pinch - unless they who are in charge of the Military are all model boaters :-)   It sounds as though the Russians have one or two in charge. :-X :-X :embarrassed:
