MTB 628 'Deadbeat' fairmile 'D'
« on: October 22, 2016, 12:06:16 pm »

Recently finished a Deans kit and made her as MTB 628. The original was ordered in 1941 and commissioned in 1942, pennant number 628. originally built as an MGB but reclassified as a MTB. She was without the scalloping for 4 torpedo tubes as in later models, however apparently was given 2 21" torpedoes and higher tube beds to clear the side when fired. She was built by J.W. & A Upham (who also built Mayflower II in 1955) they also built another 9 earlier class 'B' boats, and later another 3 'D' boats, pennant numbers 658, 701, and 755 I believe.
If anyone has any more info on her I would be very grateful. Below is picture of 'real' one sometime around 1944, likely at HMS Dolphin, Gosport. Only the 55th Flotilla used the 'sharks teeth' and then not always I understand.

A few views of the model. The tool box is 'a bridge too far' but, hey, who cares, its fun.

You need tools to keep her ship shape so that is a sensible addition. Lovely model  :-))
