wooden yacht hull waterproof / finish
« on: November 11, 2016, 09:35:36 pm »

Hi All,
I need to waterproof my latest build inside and out ,  made from birch ply and mahogany ply ,
The finish I would like is cream under the water line , keeping the mahogany finish on the sides and deck.

What I would like to know is
if I use something like sanding sealer can I paint straight over it (ideally with an aerosol ) and could the sanding sealer be the final finish?
What would you use (make of product pls)

Spud

Hopefully a pic

Hi Spud, I would use a good quality yacht varnish , will probably need two to three coats first coat will go straight into the grain , rub down with 600 grade between coats also on inside of hull ,the cream will go over the top , Pete

Hi Pete

Thanks for the reply,

I will go with the yacht varnish ,at least I can paint it in the house  :-)

The yacht is an aero naut kit  called bella,  I have seen a couple of builds on here Which have been helpful

Hi Spud,

Lovely looking model, well done.

In answer to your query, it is a good idea to give the whole hull a few coats of the varnish with the first two or so thinned by up to 50% with its recommended thinners (Should find details details on the tin). These first coats will stiffen the microscopic hairy fibres of the wood and allow them to be sanded down to a very smooth finish. Doing this also ensures that the active part of the varnish is carried below the surface of the wood itself making the surface stronger and with deeper protection. Careful sanding with fine grade glasspapers or wet and dry should make it feel like a Talcum coated babies bottom! Wipe of after each sanding with a tacky rag or a slightly damp cloth and if it is not a water based varnish allow it to dry thoroughly before the next coat.

Yacht varnish can be a bit thick and treacly and a bit of thinners (about 20%) in subsequent coats will help it go on thinly.
Remember that if you want a deep mahogany finish on the upper pats of the hull then this should be stained before you apply any varnish. Make sure there is absolutely no glue on the outside of the hull or it will stop the varnish penetrating and give you a paler patch.

Some of the Acrylic based varnishes are very good now, water soluable when wet and waterproof when dry. They are a milky colour when you start, that goes away as it dries. Acrylic  Floor varnishes are very hard wearing and can be cheaper in the long run. Exterior grades of varnish include UV protection as well. (I only use Acrylic varnishes on my models now, and apply them with a foam pad type brush)

To get a really nice finish (glass-like) you will need to apply anything up to 10 coats of varnish with a fine rub down using something like 400 grit wet and dry paper, used wet.   Your cream lower hull will cover the varnish where you need it but whatever you do, do not attempt to use a cellulose product as this will damage your lovely finish. A final thin coat of varnish over the cream and the clear will seal the join and any coloured trim you apply,,,,,It should look stupendous.....Good luck.

Ron.

PS This weather, bring it indoors to dry, its now getting too cold and your varnish or paint will not dry glossy.

Further to my last post, you asked about using sanding sealer.

This stuff was originally designed for use by french polishers, some newer types are acrylic now with microscopic french chalk suspended in it but the original types like Rustins etc are crushed shellac beetle shells in white polish, thinned for use. Therefore it is not really waterproof and should not be used as a final coating.  It is however very good at sealing new wood although it will darken the Aero-Naut mahogany veneered plywood a bit with each coat as it has a slight light brown colour.

It makes a good base for other finishes over the top but not cellulose based car sprays (There aren't so many of them about now though) Make sure you use Acrylic spray paints, Halfords, Valspar, Plasticoat etc.

Hope this helps................Ron.

Looking good nice colour! If you want a really glass like finish rub it down between coats (plenty of drying time between coats!) with 1200 wet n dry and if you really want it smooth and silk like 2000 wet n dry use them wet dry it off well then tacky rags. If you do this the varnish, once you have built up the layers, will look an inch deep. Good luck.
      Regards,
           Pete.

Hi Pete and Pete

Thanks for your positive comments and advice,
3rd coat went on tonight , I have been using 600 w&d I will pick up some 1200+

I think it needs a bit longer to dry than the 24 hrs between coats , I'm happy with the progress so far.

Sounds as though its coming on well....Yacht varnish should go 'Touch Dry'in about 8 to 10 hours. In this weather, even if it is done indoors it will take longer I'm afraid and 24 hours is expected.
One long passed member of the Victoria Model Steamboat Club called Ron Walker used only Yacht Varnish and Humbrol Paints on his models and he wouldn't touch it between coats for a week!!!, but you should have seen the finish he used to get...unbelievable.

Hi Ron Rees

It's been  a slow week regarding the build so the varnish has had more time to dry, although it doesn't look like it I have a coat of light cream under the water line as well,

Hi Spud,

That looks an absolute treat, nice one.
One of the handy things about Yacht varnish is that it can be continued over the Cream paint and if you mask and paint a nice line where they meet, it will help seal that as well, plus of course a nice gold set of lettering on the stern with its name and port of registration. Test your varnish over the cream, lettering and trim colours before doing it though.
Some people, not me though, go on to use polishing compound like Jewellers Rouge, Brasso and even some of the car products like T Cut to give a final gloss polish, but I prefer good old wax polish over the varnish once it has dried for a couple of weeks,  I don't like the thought of using abrasives just in case I mess it up.

Now all you have to do is varnish the cabins and decking...Yippee!

Cheers.........Ron.

Hi All,

A little bit further on , just about ready for more varnish this weekend ,the cream has turned out to be more of a yellow but I think it looks ok against the light wood work.

Thanks for your comments,
I'm enjoying the build and should be in the water in a few weekends ,I will post a few pics of the final result when finished.

Not sure if I should paint the mast the same colour to match under the water line or varnish it???

Hi Pete,

Sounds good Pete

I  was thinking earlier that if I varnished it 1st , and didn't like it I could still paint it but can't do it the other way round.

Hi All,

Today was the day, had a few problems with the rigging cable supplied in the kit but i was still able to try it in the pond today , I have decided not to fit a sail arm servo for now partly because of the extra holes that need drilling in the deck and it's just a Sunday sailer anyway.
A few pic's on the pond in a light wind ,I'm happy with the result but i will make a few minor changes over the next few weeks ..
Thanks for all the post's /advice and guidance I have received during the build
