RMAS Moorhen crane
« on: November 16, 2016, 02:05:54 pm »

I'm starting to build the RMAS Moorhen but would like to add a nice crane either static or functional. I have not found adequate plans for one or a source for a functional one. The Modelslipways version here in the US is no longer available. It will be powered by a Voith Schneider unit with a brushless motor from Bauer Modelle in Germany. Very nice looking unit. Placement location in the hull of that single unit advice would also be welcomed. Could someone please bring me some guidance? I would really appreciate that. :-)

The original ships had 2 360 degree units in the stern.
Dodes on here was a past Captain of her and does have some photos.

Hi Bob!
Thanks for that surprising/helpful information. The only picture (of a built model as well as the plans) I have shows one crane at the bow, port side! The plans only show two dual winches at the stern. I'd like to see the pictures you have if possible. If not, I'll search the internet.
Thanks very much again.

Hi, Er thanks for forwarding a link to my build .

IF I can assist with your build in any way, please get back to me. I did post as many pictures of my own build as I built it, but if I can guide and assist, im here. I used the original plans to create the crane, as yes, nothing available comes anywhere near.managed to get my crane to slew and raise/lower, but ran out of space underneath to create space for a winch drum. but if you plan the winch cable right, theres sufficient to allow you to lift a buoy up from the deck and lower over the side.

I did get mine to function. It was a bit of a challenge but will have pictures later of how I did it.

Here are the pictures of what I did to make it functional. :-)  I also use a servo speed reducer to rotate the crane smoothly at a slow speed.

Looks good. What i did was to mount a geared motor in  parallel with the crane pivot tube, then link with gear wheels and a chain, so it gave me full 360 degree rotation. Then, as it appears you did, use a second servo to act as the lift ram.  I then ran out of space for a third for the winch drum, as it seems my hull is shallower than yours as supplied to me. If you are going to leave this panel as removeable, make sure you seal well as due to the flat bows, it does not take much forward speed to wash water over the bows and on to the deck, even in calm/still water, once moving. I learnt that the hard way !

Thank you! Good idea about achieving the 360 degree rotation. I'll keep that in mind for the next one.
The panel is held in place with rare earth magnets. Very effective yet removable too. Thanks for the bow wave advice!
