Graupner 500 for A Graupner Shark
« on: November 16, 2016, 06:19:46 pm »

I have a Graupner shark, the instructions show a Graupner 500 ( Not sure is this is a speed or just a 500 )

Does anyone have one and if so could you please tell me which one it is, also assuming that I will not actually easily be able to get one what the best equivalent is please.

Thanks Larry

It was a bog standard Graupner 500 SP rated for about 17000RPM at 8.4volts. Anything in that ballpark should give you lively performance.

Stick a brushless set up with lipo batteries. will give you more room inside. also use mini metal servos.

Not quite sure what you would do with any space freed up, as the motor is stashed in a pretty inaccessible part  of the boat. I'm also not sure how well the standard gearbox would hold up to increased power, as it's a bit agricultural.

Lithium batteries definitely worth doing though, will give you much longer running times and improved performance.

Had thought about Brushless, but going the traditional motor route, as Subculture says, where the motor is it would make no difference if room was saved.

Once I have it up and running I will look into that, bit to go yet though. Still trying to find a replacement gear with the appropriate fittings.

HPC gears should be able to help, they do most gear styles. Not cheap, but good quality. Or ditch the gearbox and go for a pair of brushless motors, space is tight I know. Whilst you're at it you could fit some shaft seals to the prop shafts

What's the next best thing ( Not Brushless ) to a Graupner 500 Speed ?, I believe these were rated at about 24500 rpm looking at a box on ebay.

I Dave
32 teeth, currently do not have the unit but I think it was 24/25 mm Diam to take a 4mm shaft.

You could squeeze in something like a pair of these motors, running direct drive on 2s lipo or six or seven NiMH.

https://hobbyking.com/en_us/c2028-micro-brushless-outrunner-1400kv-22g.html

That will give you roughly the same performance as the standard geared 500, and if you want more performance just increase up to 12 volts. However I think you'd find the standard performance fast enough- I've seen a few of these in action and owners tend to end up reducing the porp size and/or pitch to slow things down a bit.

If you want gears cut, talk to RW Racing, based in Gosport. They have been manufacturing upgrade gears in all sorts of materials for many years. RC cars being their main speciality, however one of our members got a replacement gear made for his kitchen blender, very happy he was too. nothing comes cheap, you get what you pay for..

If you google for photos with Graupner plus 1139/20 or 1140/2 stock codes you might find an active auction of the single 2:1 multispeed unit or the gear set.

Never thought of looking at those, I have one a 1114 but main gear is too large, so will see if I can find a 1139/20.

I meant 1140/20, not 1140/2.         1139 for the whole multispeed unit and 1140 for gear set only.

http://modelisme-buggy-vintage.com/BATEAU/Reducteur-pignon has them but with a hefty postal charge.
