Malcs Hms Fearless build
« on: November 16, 2016, 08:39:43 pm »

Hi as promised I am starting my build log of my attempt at building Hms Fearless in 1/96 scale, I bought the hull and drawings at a local swap meet a few weeks ago, the hull had not been started but has sustained some damage due to storage so some filling will be required over and above the normal prop area and rudder/bilge keel areas, I have copied some ideas off other builds and I am opting for forward and aft water tanks pumping fresh water to and thro as required, I have opted for fresh water as our local pond has a lot of feathers and duck poo in it and I don't fancy having to unclog the pumps and pipework :o, I am also making my own running gear and am controlling the rudder with snakes epoxied under the well deck and coming out at the forward ramp and the tiller arms will be accessible through a removable panel in the well deck, it is also my intention to assist the well deck flooding by having a hole through the hull between the two rudders and smaller multiple holes in the removable panel so in effect the tiller arms will get wet in use but will drain when out of the water.
The stern ramp has been 3d printed by myself and is fastened to the hull with piano hinge and I am using modified sturmey archer monkey chains for the lifting and lowering of the door (a friend of mine was asking me a while ago about obtaining small chain like miniature bike chain as he had looked all over for it and after a bit of thought came up with the monkey chain I remembered from my childhood) lol I think I am showing my age now O0 .

You seem to be developing new techniques in this build. Good luck with your endeavours and I hope to pick up some tips along the way. :-)

Regards,

Ray.

Yes good observation Ray, I sometimes have a habit of thinking outside of the box its most likely my engineering background, not always a good thing as there is something to be said for keeping it simple. :-))

Another interesting build to watch for over the winter, and a technically challenging one as well  :-))

Well, it certainly works Mal - have you considered what to use as a water repellent for the chain? I'm thinking good old Vaseline may suffice. :-)

Ray.

Yes will probably use Vaseline less harmful I reckon to the environment, they are slightly modified in profile so some of the plating has been ground away I expect a bit of rust staining will add to the weathering effect :}

Malc...that printed stern ramp/door with the crispness of the simulated fabrication construction looks great  :-))

The lowering speed of ~~3 seconds & the raising speed of ~~6 seconds appears [to me] too fast for scale

We see the twin servos & spring servo savers and assume you are using a Y lead?

One way to slow the ramp speed is an ACTion  P96 servomorph....which also has the function of setting the end of travel points which may be advantageous

I have just re-read the P96 specification, but if does not reference a Y lead configuration ...if you are interested it may be worth a question to [Inertia - Dave Milbourn]...who will confirm suitability

Hi Derek I am using a turnigy servo slower with a built in reverser for one of the servo,s it has connections for three servo,s and the connection to the receiver so I can alter the speed up and down individually and also alter servo direction on at least one servo, I havnt tried three servo,s on it to find out if more can be changed but then again if not the other two would be opposite anyway :-)), the video was taken when first set up , I have since fettled it and now the speed is slower both ways and I have updated the spring arrangement of the servo savers too, the servo discs are also 3d printed and have a recess on the underside to line up with a standard servo disc which has been drilled and pop riveted together to enable enough linear movement for the chain travel.
One drawback to slowing down the servo,s is a lack of torque this I may rectify by upgrading the servo,s at a later time as they are the basic Hobby king ones at the moment.
The stern door will be sanded smooth and filled where required and should look ok when painted up, it has not been printed in ABS but in PLA which is bio degradable (not my favourite material for using  but has a much smaller shrinkage problem than Abs) I am hoping that when painted it should be up to the job.

BTW Derek you should have seen the speed without the servo slower lol :o

Thanks ballastanksian :-)) after it has been sanded down and fettled somewhat it should look the part and an adjustment to the speed should make it more realistic, I still have a long way to go, the motors are in now I am using mfa geared motors 2.5.1 ratio and 15 amp mtronics speed controllers , am hoping to do sea trials around xmas time or early new year. :}

I have recently been using items from Model Radio Workshop, the owner Mike Ridley produces a range of servo control options. All the products I have used have been excellent!
Well worth a visit www.modelradioworkshop.co.uk

A small update - I have mounted the motors and 2 water pumps at the weekend, at the moment the motors are connected to the shafts using a straight piece of brass in place of the universal joints until the adhesive has set, the pumps are mounted as low as possible in the hull one to fill the well deck tank and one to empty it again, I have used ali tubing to create a loop which I hope will avoid any tendency to syphon, It was my intention to use one way valves but I found that the valves restricted the flow as the pump pressure caused the valve to restrict in the normal flow direction.
I have 3d printed a micro switch mount to fit on standard servo's it takes two micro switches and a slightly modified servo disc, one servo will be to operate the pumps and the other will be for extra's like working davits and so on.
I have managed to fit all five servo's in a row as I want the installation to be as compact as possible to retain as much battery space as possible.

Hi Derek not heard of bob k any chance you can send me a link or more info on his problem?.
BTW I am planning to secure the pipes with cable ties at a later date do you think that will solve the problem?.
