And just a further thought, if you want to know what life was like aboard Nelson's navy then read Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels. They will take you there in a way that no non fiction source can hope to match. And they are dead accurate too.

Absolutely true Colin,
Whilst going through all of the Aubrey Maturin series of books, I did some research into Patrick O'Brian. The man was a major military/navy historian. All of the adventures of Captain Aubrey were based on actual navy engagements of the time, based on the historical records available, including ships logs. The names of some (not all) of the ships involved were changed, as were some of the exact dates; due to literary license. There really is much more in the books than in the film Master and Commander.

Ooh! let the cat out of the bag there didn't I....I never said Cussler was fact, I even acknowledge that they are drivel, just a good read for the sheer fantasy fun of it. My favourite Maritime Author is Monserrat, but like music I would never poo-poo an individuals freedom to read and enjoy all forms of literature or music. I have written enough Technical books and Manuals in my work life to allow me the pleasure of reading anything that keeps my brain working and gives pleasure...We are all different after all.

Cussler's early stuff could be quite entertaining as it was often based on real life mysteries which were ingeniously developed as rather far fetched but exciting storylines. Today his franchise rather scrapes the bottom of the barrel though. Just one of several, usually American authors, who employ others to write third class material under their names. Not sure why as he can't need the money but he has still sold his soul to the devil.

I forgot about The Marine Quarterly. [www.marinequarterly.com]. It's a beautifully produced 112 page quarterly book with tales and anecdotes from some of the best marine essayists, Tom Cunliffe and Sam Llewellyn to name just two. Highly recommended
