« on: November 22, 2016, 12:06:59 pm »

This popped up on FaceBook,  what other old model boat related photos can we find?

NB: I think that's SteamBoatPhil fifth from right!  %)

Good to have a proper dress code at the lake. No riff-raff allowed.

Col. Cholmondleigh-Worner (2nd left) sees to that! He is anticipating a compulsory pipe-smoking club-rule in the near future!

Like the type 45s we see modelled today, those destroyers in the first image woud have been cutting edge technology represented then.

Amazing.

If you have a long commute for work then it will sadly take hours each day. A friend of mine lives in Somerset and communtes daily to London and so sets off at awful O'clock in the morning and if the trains are on time etc gets back at 8:30 in the evening so can understand why it is so hard for some people to find time amongst all the real life stuff to model and sail.

I expect some of these chaps in the period photos worked long long days.

I think this is the earliest surviving photo at Llandudno West Shore lake, taken in 1904

this one is of South Shields South Marine Park roughly about 1886 when the Club first began.

2nd picture is of the Club after a German mine was dropped on it in about 1942

3rd picture is just after the First World War I believe.

Colwyn Bay's original model boating lake was built in 1931 as part of the new Eirias Park, in 1985 that was buried under a carriageway of the new A55 bypass.

Our present lake was built as a replacement, still in the park.  This lake is to be lost now for a new housing estate and we are in the middle of moving to a much larger lake 150metres to the west.

Maybe not so old, only about 60 years ago.
My father (left) and Rod Burman talking electronics at Mortlake pond
Our first boat, in the photo, was a Wavemaster built on the kitchen table and first had a Bonds electric motor but probably an E.D. Racer 2.5 cc by the time the photo was taken.

Does anyone have any old photos of Sherringham lake [just up the road from Cromer.

I always found when sitting and watching the models sailing just how user friendly that lake was, as it was raised above ground level not needing for us old crocks to have to bend over to put a model in, not that I had a model too put in.

Would be nice to see some old photos of it, as I miss the old place.
