Those last two images are enlightening bluebird ...I am sure her steerage could have been a little tender  :o at speed with her high  G of G

It just reproves that model engineering was certainly taken to extreme levels years ago........ and makes our current hi powered brushless drives with quasi battery power a little tame ;) .....

It looks pleasingly steam punk with all the linkages and tidy little funnel.

Hi Nemo thank you very much for the photo of the Clacton model boating pond.  It brought back many happy holiday memories of sailing model boats in the late 40's and very early 50's.
regards Roy

Gentleman.......Start your Engines..... {-)

Nemo....that last image is beautiful, however I suspect that chap near the centre of image with the barge  type hydroplane craft may have an unfair advantage  <*<

hi there

whilst searching on the web for photographs of Mr Bob Kirtley's hydroplane Pisces II - in the early days - doing the tethered run - up to 120 mph - at The Northern Lakes, I cam across these 2 hydroplanes but no luck as yet for Bob's

What a fabulous thread - hadn't realized that there were so many who're interested in the vintage models...

Talking of hydros, here's an image from the Model Engineer circa 1934 (I think) showing members of the "Wicksteed Club Team".

A couple of years ago I managed to find a couple of early hydroplanes, on a well known auction site, and they're the 4th and 5th from the left in this image. They were both owned and raced by a Mr H R Perkins and the identification was easy as he raced under the number "W13" with a boat called "JEP" (it's the 4th boat).

I'll post some photos of the actual boats when I get a chance over the weekend.

It is good to know that some of the old models still exist and are cherished. Mind you some do come up on auction sites in a right state, but all the same it is obvious that many managed to escape the skip or bonfire.

They certainly are sought after and cherished nowadays but, you're right, it's sad to think of all those that might have been consigned to the skip or bonfire...

Personally I think it's great when you can discover the provenance of such models, here are a couple of shots of the 5th hydro from the left in the above image.

That photo pre-dates the time when the Wireless College had that building, a mast is visible in this later photo taken near the lake and a different mast is shown at the top of their Facebook page....  www.facebook.com/wirelesscollege/

Cheers Kinmel. When I left in '62 I lost touch. I never got a ticket I couldn't get past 14WPM reading morse. When I get some more time I will go through it properly. Dave.

The 14 WPM test was always a big hurtle. I think it was only 12 over here send and receive I could do 16 in a practice session, but as soon as you said TEST I chocked and could never pass the mark. I understand they now have a technician's test that does not require Morse.

Gerald.

The PMG ticket was 24wpm. At which speed you were hearing words rather than letters. I never did.
