Custom Rudder Shaft?
« on: November 28, 2016, 02:31:24 am »

Hiya guys :)

ok been having a look on how to make a custom rudder/shaft etc, not sure on the sizes yet exactly but the skeg end where the rudder will sit will be around 10mm so im thinking of a 5mm aluminium shaft with a 6mm (inner) brass tube?

The rudder its self is going to be brass in the center and wood either side, so i'm going to solder the brass part of the rudder onto the shaft, so whats best for the actual shaft between aluminium and brass to solder to the brass rudder?

Also i heard its essential to keep the top of the tube above water level to stop water pouring through? ..is there another method to keep water from coming through the tube (will grease work?), same goes for prop shaft, how do i stop water coming through the prop shaft as obviously this sits way below the water line?

Cheers :)

ok scrap the idea of brass to aluminium as i believe its almost impossible to solder! so i'm going to have to use a brass shaft & and brass tube.

Also is solder the best option?, or there an adhesive instead that would bond just as good as i'm too great with a soldering iron! ...i can do simple stuff, but i've already looked at a vid on youtube on soldering brass, and its not as straight forward as id like! lol :(
