Fish Trawler "Meili-Lady"
« on: December 07, 2016, 08:50:18 am »

Hi ,back again my latest build not an Australian design, this time based on fish trawlers in your neck of the woods, same scale as my previous builds, scale 1:16 , 49" x15" x7" ( 65' x 20' x 9' 4") the main frame ( keel, stem etc of 12mm Tasmanian oak, keel is later laminated to 16 mm) the frames are of 16 mm ply

Photo 1 .. Side profile of the hull and start of the main frames.
2 ..  Ready to solder the oil tube into the stern tube.
3 ..  Glueing the back section and the stern tube into position.
4  ..  Inside of all of the frames jig sawed out  before attacking them with the bandsaw.
5  .. Inside stern view of her frames.
6 ..  All frames in position and brazed  .

Thank you for your comments guys, the  photo are.
1 ..Transom and part of the lower bulwark attached.
2 .. I put the bulbous bow on in sections then bogged and shaped her once the planking was completed in that area.We have had bulbs on 2 of our trawlers both weren't what you would call  perfect, so I shaped this one to how I would have it constructed if we had built again. I dare say there will be a % of dislikes to this design.
3 ..Hull half planked up, I know the UK trawlers like to have more of a rounded transom, I designed this one with bit more meat on her corners , and the lower section as some of our (Aus) trawlers have here.
4  .. Showing the bulb nearly blocked in prior to the good old Plasti-Bond  being applied.
5  .. hooray for paint ( that will cover all the bog up), I ran thinner planking strips around her shoulders, as she has a fair bit of flare to contend with, then skarfed the remaining planking to it.
6  ..And showing the shape of the filler planks in her flares section and how they were skarfed in.

If that is the way you have to do the bulb to get it right then I can see no plausible reason to critisise. It is an awful shape to create in one sitting and your joggling of the planking more than makes up for it Brian  8) Have yourself a well deserved stubby or two and remember that the admirers of your cabinet making outnumber your detractors by a huge number (assuming you have any)

Excellent as per usual:O)

Hi there  :-) ,thanks guys the next lot of photos are.
1  ..With the first 4 frames i spliced flat sections of Tassie oak into their top section to take the planking above the deck level around the shoulders, and then ribbed this section only.
2 & 3 .. The remainder of her hull I fitted extra frames in between the main frames ,just for extra strength ( not that she needed it), I was able to use most of the cut outs from the main frames, bit of a slow job as each had to be shaped to fit that section of the hull, then I would cut them to the thickness I required before gluing them in , the inside of the hull was then was given 2 coats of resin.
4 .. Then framed  and braced the sloped back section with Tassie oak .
5  ..Showing her with all her frames and ribs installed and the start (at the stern area) of installing her merbau shelving.
6 & 7 ..  Sowing the shape of the merbau shelving around the flared section....

Hi guys next section of the build.
1  ..All of the shelving installed and bit extra at the stern section where the trawl gantries will be afixed.
 2  ..Extra deck beams 20 x 22mm (3/4+" x 7/8" ) of red oak.
3  ..Showing bulk of the deck beams installed ,except the lift out area on back deck.
4-5-6  ..The lift out deck sections prior to laying the ply deck ( 3mm).
7  .. Inside the hull looking towards the stern showing the base a lift out section with the net drums will sit (so as can easily get to the rudders tiller arm etc).....

Excuse my bleating on Brian, but that is some of the best miniature carpentary I have ever seen. On its own I believe that the stern area with those gorgeous knees would win a prize.

Hi there back with few more shots of her.
1  .. Construction of the motor base, (installing the MFA Torpedo 850 spinning a 90 mm prop) the servo and ESC control bases ,made from Tassie oak.
2  ..Guards for the fly wheel on the motor ,one is for the previous model "Evie-K-B" which has the same motor installed.
3  ..The underside of the motor base ( or beds) even thou the s.s bolts are wound in firmly  use a brass rod pined into the side of the bolt, so no chance of them turning.
4  ..Showing the motor base assembled, after it has already been pre fitted in the model.
5 ..Marking out of the trawl winch's side plates and drums etc.
6  ..Assembling the drum plates and strengtheners.
7  ..The winches are about 90 % completed .
Will put up more in a few days as heading south on a little road trip tomorrow, Cheers.

Hi Peter thank you, yes arrived back in the Bay on Sunday, have been doing odd jobs for the Mother (page full) and re assembling the models I had up at the house (seven) took about a day to dismantle and bubble rap , on my 3rd day now , have to then put some more shelves up in my old room to house them, i suppose you had the last model meet at Ballina this last Sunday ?
These photos are...
1 ..laying the 3mm ply decking.
2 ..Sides and across the stern finished ( 2mm ply for that section).
3 ..Laying the base for the aft trawl gantries.
4  ..Strengthening the insides of the trawl gantries, as will be towing a set of gear behind her.
5  ..Using aluminum cross arms with tassy oak strengtheners.
6  ..Showing the main section of the trawl gantries connected together.......

Yes we did Brian. There's no sail day on Sunday (Christmas Day), the next scheduled day is 8th January but Martin, Brian, Peter B and Mike will be at the Evans Head Air Show with the club display. I won't be there as it's the day we go to the caravan park at Lennox Head. I hope I can catch up with you at some stage.

Morning, some more shots of the build.
1  & 2 .. Cleaning out the front of the windows, my new Dremil drill just on 7 months old decided to stop working ,so borrowed Old Shrimpers Dremil (saved the day) as it took about 2 months to get mine back, and showing the front of the w-house attached, used a 5/8 " ply base for the w-house ( so no worries of any movement)
3  ..I find the old credit cards or in this case old R.V card make good templates for the different curves in the window areas .
4  ..Cleaning out the inside layer of the ply for the plastic windows to be recessed into later after painting.
5  .. All the sides of the w-house attached.
6 & 7 .. Showing the inside of the w-house before starting on the beams etc.....
