I thought Gary Sparrow saved the American bacon there!  (Goodnight Sweetheart, repeated on Yesterday and Forces TV).

Don't tell me we share a birthday, Ned. And what malt were you enjoying? I have yet to broach the Smith's Founder's Reserve Glenlivet my wife gave me. Won't be long, though!

Interesting programme, but nothing new. In fact, they could just have based it on The Man Who Broke Purple by Ronald W. Clark published in 1977.

One thing they did not mention is that by happy chance (one there for the conspiracy theorists) all the American aircraft carriers were at sea at the time of the attack.

If the US knew of the impending attack then it makes perfect sense to get them out at sea as they knew the Japanese were well equipped with carriers and both sides would have made similar conclusions from the Taranto raid by the RN the previous year made by slower aircraft than equivalent American or Japanese carrier aircraft.

It was tragic that the US Battlefleet was so badly rent, but they were becoming very expensive deterrents and escort vessels for the newer naval weapons system. That so many sailors made the supreme sacrifice is trebly tragic.

And I'm a year younger than Ned!

My two daughters, incidentally, were born on Pearl Harbor Day and Independence Day. Pity I didn't have the wit to get married on an equally memorable date!
