Double Planking Help!!
« on: December 15, 2016, 11:10:56 am »

Good morning Shipmates,

I hadn't planned on double planking as I had hoped to use 2.5mm Sepele planks throughout, clear finished. However, a free sheet of Sepele from my son turned out to be 1.3mm so double planking it is. So having installed additional supports for the thinner planks and started the 1st layer my thoughts turned to the 2nd layer. How am I going to clamp or otherwise the 2nd layer.

Any advice would be appreciated as Im sure you've guessed I haven't done this before.

Shiver me timbers its cold in the workshop/garage today.

Regards.........Alan

Hi Joinerman, good advice above, I use dress makers pins although they are not what they used to be. If you cannot always follow the previous plank due to curves etc.  Just run near but keep it straight, i.e. do not strain the plank, that way when you go back to fill in the gaps it is all nice easy triangles.
The pins when pressed in just push the wood fibres aside and when removed a dab of water will allow the wood to relieve the pressures caused and the 'hole' will almost vanish.

hi there this planking is 1.5 mm thick and I know its a bit thicker than your planks but it could still be done with the thin 10 mm long brass pins which are the ones I used.

Pic I hope shows below :-)

Hi Bluebird,

Thanks for the pin suggestion, I did use these on the Billings Nordcap kit which was fine as it was painted. However, the Riva Aquarama will be clear finished (planking quality permitting) so I think I will pass on the pins this time. Thanks anyway.

Hi Alan I just finished a second layer of planking on a trawler I'm building and I was able to use masking tape to hold the planks / strips in place as they were only 0.5 mm thick . Worked well and I'm pleased with results ! Really depends on the thickness of your second layer of planking what method you use .
I posted some pictures on the forum Facebook page last week of my build .
Cheap easy way if the planks are thin .

Hi John,
Im planning to use the 1.3mm for both layers. I do have quite a bit of .5mm marquetry veneer but I doubt I have enough mahogany or similar. I'll have to check my stock!.

Many thanks for your advice, I'll post some pics shortly and some commentary.

I can't seem to upload picture from the iPad onto the forum so I post a few pictures on the forum Facebook page , it's easier .

1.3 mm may be a little stiff for the tape but maybe worth a try , as I said it's cheap !! Lol

Looking forward to seeing your pictures.

Morning John,

Couldn't get in to the F'book pages last night using my Samsung tablet, but tried this morning using my desktop Mac and Hey presto it works. First of all, you're hull looks superb and if I might say so a very tidy and organised work bench.

As this is my first scratch build it is also a bit experimental (trial and error) so I expect I'll try all the options and probably end up using a mixture of them. The hull is quite flat in places but from end to end it curves and twists so interesting times ahead.

Thanks for the advice, not sure how much more will get done before Christmas. I thought the shopping was finished yesterday but it appears I have a list to "pop out for" this morning.

When building the Bismarck, I use lots of elastic bands and 'packing pieces' to hold the planks in place...

Hi Alan the bench isn't always that clean !! Lol And to be honest I think everyone is winging it a bit when it comes to model boats , every boat is different .
As Matrin says elastic bands and packing work too , forgot I used them on parts.
Not sure I'll get much more done until the new year but I will try .
Have a nice holiday and I hope Santa is good to you !

Regards

Hi John,

Whilst Christmas shopping yesterday I called into a fabric shop and picked up some different thickness dressmaking pins and a selection of elastic bands from a stationers so I think I have most bases covered. That plus a variety of glues should do the trick.

Watch this space, (after christmas!)

Have a good one........Alan

if you have a keel, clamp a flexible plank at keel and bulwark, and packing to hold the plank you are fitting (or wedges)

Hi Shipmates,
Seasons Greetings to you all.   :-))   :-))   :-))  Just getting the hang of posting images on this site. I cant upload from my phone due to file size, so it's on to the desktop first then onto the site. Maybe I should just use a camera!!

Anyway, here is the hull which after Christmas I will start the double planking of the upper section of the hull. More pic's to follow.

Hullo Alan....and welcome to our woodwork classes  ;D......forgive me, but I thought you were going to make the first layer from planks

The image here looks to be a very sharp and tidy sheet planking....and there is absolutely no issue here with this type of hull.......a second layer of individual planking will sit and glue beautifully to the rigid curved sheeting  :-))

What type of glue are you using?, and with diagonal planking on this style of craft, leaving the timber planking above the waterline unpainted can provide beautiful aspects of the timber colour, grain & hue ...however naturally finished in clear lacquer's or polyutathane.......

Keep us posted with your progress................. Derek

Ahaaaa!...I see it now Alan.......you have started two threads about the same issue......I now see on the alternate thread your comment about sheeting....

This can be very confusing  >>:-(.....we have one current member who has about 9 different threads for one build   {-)

Hi Derek, the lower section of the hull (below the waterline) is single planked (2.5mm thick), width of the planks varies 5 to 15mm.
The section above the waterline is currently single planked using 1.3mm thick veneer, hence the need to do a second layer.
Glues used, woodwork fast grab D3 grade PVA style and one of the superglues with an accelerator.
Finish is still under investigation, was hoping to just use polyurethane, but I think it will end up epoxy etc. Maybe some form of lacquer to finish.
Sorry about the double thread, I thought I might be able to delete one. But will stick to one now.

Seasons Greetings.. .Alan

Hi Shipmates,

Need to exercise my digits if nothing else during this holiday period. So here are a couple of earlier pictures of the development of the Riva Aquarama.

Good morning all, a beautiful day here at sunny Winchelsea Beach but freezing cold. Anyway attached is the latest photo regarding the Riva. Double planking of the upper section of the hull completed and the first layer of epoxy resin applied. My first attempt at using epoxy, I was working in a fairly warm area and it was going off quite quickly hence the finish. Im sure a bit of sanding will sort it before applying the glass cloth with the next layer.

Overall quite happy with this first attempt at scratch building, but plenty of room for improvement on the next one which looks like being the Princess Loane, a 16m french trawler. Free plans downloaded and being considered!

A bit late but a Happy New Year.........
