Identity please, TID?
« on: December 16, 2016, 10:14:47 am »

Yes I know its a sidewinder type trawler :} but I'm interested in the tug, does anyone know what type it is? I did think it was a tid, but it seems to be a fair bit shorter and smaller overall.

I recall seeing lots of these in the Hull docks many years ago, but I can't say I have seen them anywhere else, they were primarily as can be seen, used for moving trawlers around the docks.

A great resource for all things TID, and when you get there, you'll find that there were a few TIDs bought for use at Hull, 28, 44, 79, 86 for example. But when you get to TID86 you can stop as she was renamed Bernie, which matches the name at the bows.

On a side note, TIDs 28, 44, and 79 were three of the many TIDs bought by Newhaven-based salvage and scrap company METREC. They would scrap anything, we even had submarines being cut up back then! They kept the best of the TIDs, re-engined them and sold them on or used them for their own operations. The ones that were worse for wear were unceremoniously set about with the gas axes. Though it's not stated, there's a good chance that Bernie ended up here at Newhaven, following her Hull based sisters.

TID 86 could be a candidate.  The front deckhouse has a pronounced slope and what appears to be lifebelts attached.

And the trawler for anyone interested is the Kingston Topaz.

TID86 just a candidate? Renamed Bernie? Name on the bows in the original photo is clearly Bernie?

As I said earlier, look no further - I'd call that a definite ID!  :}

Thanks everyone, so it is a tid then, it must be the photo foreshortening it. It's now marked down for a future build at some point. My list gets longer every week,  I wonder if I'll manage it before father time comes calling %)

I was agreeing with you!  To be honest I didn't get the name "Bernie" from that first photo!
