I remember the bombing!  Buccaneers, Sea Vixens and Hunter of the RN and RAF dropped 161 bombs, 1,500 tons of napalm and 44,500 litres of kerosene and fired 16 rockets. This may have been a little excessive considering the Torrey Canyon wasn't shooting back!

Out of the darkness of a terrible situation comes light!

YOU ARE A WAG SIR!

A little amusing quote often takes the pressure off what was a worrying situation for many. It made me giggle this morning after what was a day of maritime mourning yesterday.

I was driving past RAF Marham with my father in our new red Ford Corsair as two flights of 3 Hunters flew overheat with armament under the wings. Remarked to my father.....bet they are going to bomb the TC. "don't be daft" he said. that night it came on both local and national news that RAF Marham Hunters had taken part. he went very quiet, lol.

I was 11 and remember it on all the evening news bulletins. What was the one that went aground off Yarmouth/Lowestoft in the 70's?

Torrey Canyon was heading for Milford Haven and hit Pollard's Rock on the Seven Stones reef, between the Cornish mainland and the Isles of Scilly.
You might be thinking of the Eleni V which collided with a bulk ore carrier called the Roseline and broke in 2.  That was late in 1978.

That'll be the one. I and 5 mates along with girlfriends had stumped up in cars at a camping site along the coast for a holiday. We stayed one night after seeing the clumps of oil along the beach, packed up and moved all the way across to Wales O0 The things you did as a teenager {-)

My father-in-law worked at an ARDE and had something to do with making up the bombs dropped on the TC, which contained a special incendiary/explosive mix. When Bert retired, he was given a set of framed photos of the bombing taken from a Buccaneer. I inherited them but lost them years ago, otherwise I could have shown them here.
